I have had an amateur interest in WWII history for a long time but I know more about the Air War and pacific Navel war than the European land war despite both my grandfathers serving in Europe. I would like to know where is a good place to ask question about specific units and actions they were involved in and get some detailed answers?

Both of my grandfathers landed in France immediately after D-Day. One served with a mechanized cavalry unit and was positioned offshore during the invasion but had to wait a few days to land. He was at the northern end of the 'Bulge' and helped repel the Germans from his sector. He was in Czechlaslovakia at the end of the war. The other, a combat engineer lieutenant, arrived in Normandy after the beachhead had been established, July or August I think, and ran a supply transfer point before moving inland to Antwerp and eventually into Germany.

Anyhow, I've always been primarily interested in the campaign in Western Europe. I was able to find several months of original after-action reports from the cavalry unit, hosted online at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, and even found my grandfather's name reported within! If you are willing to share your grandfathers' units I wouldn't mind trying to help you find information.

Skycat, The grandfather I was looking for unit information on was James A. Helegda. He served in the 80th Infantry Division, 1 Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment.

I have a map that was produced by the Compiled by the G-3 section of HQ 80th INF DIV on 22 May, 1945. Than were apparently issued to all members of the Division. The map is singed by all my grandfather's buddies with their names and addresses. My grandfather also has marked in little circles on it things he was involved in with arrows pointing to the locations and the dates of the events. For example one says "One Helluav a Battle. April 1,2,3,4. We
captured a German general" with an arrow pointing to Kessel. Another just say "A Wee Bit of Trouble Here Too. April 11,12" with an arrow pointing at Erfurt. These are some of the things I would like to be able to find details on.

Edit before I even post. While looking up online to ensure I got his Infantry Regiment correct I stumbled across some action reports for the periods I mentioned above. Strange how you can look for something deliberately and find nothing and then find it by accident.

You're starting out with more information than most people who are researching their family members. I'm glad you found the action reports also.

Are these the after action reports you found?
http://www.80thdivision.com/WebArchives/MiscReports.htm

This has the 318th Infantry Regiment's reports categorized by each battalion as well as from the divisional level.

Actually what I found were AAR's for the HQ S-1 section which at lest filled in what the regiment was doing. Thanks for the link. I did find the info in another part of the same site though.

I need to dig out that newspaper article that list when he earned his Silver Star. It is to bad that he died in 1994. I would have liked to talk to him now that I am older. My other grandfather, who is still alive, age 93, served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. He was in the Signal Corp attached to the Air Corp. He directed fighter planes from mobile operations trailers. I don't know what his unit was however.
