I was watching Battle of Britain over the weekend and the thought came to mind that with the current Hollywood trend of doing remakes, what if they did a remake of BoB. Which current actors will you pick to play the characters?

My choice:

George Lucas: Director (as he is a fan of the movie and it influenced him in creating the dogfight scenes of Star Wars).

Hans Zimmer: Music Director

Jude Law= Sq Leader Canfield (Michael Caine)

Ewan McGregor= Sq Leader Harvey (Christopher Plummer)

Daniel Craig= Sq Leader Skipper (Robert Shaw)

Hugh Grant= Sg Pilot Andy (Ian McShane)

Ian McKellen= Air Vice Marshall Park (Trevor Howard)

Liam Neeson= Air Marshall Dowding (Lawrence Olivier

I would NOT want a remake of "Battle of Britain". I simply see no reason to remake a film that is already a classic.

George Lucas as director? **shudder**

Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka! Taka!

Never put Hugh Grant in a movie that may involve testosterone. Otherwise, nice cast! Leave out Lucas, he might Ewok it. How about Peter Weir instead? (Master and Commander director)

That said, it might be better to leave it alone. There's no way they'd restore enough planes to pull it off, they'd take a shortcut and use cgi which just wouldn't be the same. Ok for the explosions, some of those in BoB looked pretty bad, but seeing and hearing those planes was just awesome.

No, no remake. Anymore than I can see someone doing a remake of "Casablanca" or "Treasure of the Sierra Madre". It don't work because it was done once and done well.

If someone wanted to do a Battle of Britain type movie, but an original theme, I might accept that.

Yeah, it would get 'Hollywooded' and would probably have Will Smith saving the Earth from zombie alien Germans... smile

Yeah and he'd be saying funny one-liners like "Oh, you just did NOT shoot that alien Rheinmetall 20mm at me!!".

You can't 'remake' a classic.

If they want to do an air combat remake, do "Top Gun". It's a pretty good flick, but with some serious flaws for folks like us. Certainly not in the classic realm. Re do, put the carrier in the Persian Gulf, give them Super Hornets, some A2G as well as A2A action and it's gold. Tom Cruise is a little past prime for this role, but I'm sure there are others who would do a good job.

You would need Harrison Ford in it banging on the planes to get them work and then arguments over who shot first.

That was already done with "Stealth" and the movie was both a critical and box office disaster.

I am not suggesting they should do a remake, but IF they did. Even if they botch the story, at least it will be a box office hit if they get big name actors, and Oleg will get a big boost in SOW:BOB sales (thinking ahead).

I'm not so sure about that; in fact I highly doubt it would be a box office hit at least in the US anyway. The box office track record for military-themed aviation films in the US is not good at all.

Let's see,

Flyboys - Bomb
Stealth - Bomb
Behind Enemy Lines - Only somewhat of an aviation film and it performed "average" at the box office.

On the other hand, we do have Top Gun and Pearl Harbor, both with big name actors.

Yes, "Top Gun" was a box office hit......24 years ago. "Pearl Harbor" didn't lose money at the box office but it also greatly disappointed the studio and industry expectations at the time.
