Cool. I got the Gamestop email a few days ago, been waiting for this, and went ahead and ordered yesterday. I NEVER play online, but I will for this. Besides, I couldn't resist the Constitution class either.
I'd really like this one to be good, but honestly my hopes aren't very high based on what I've been reading so far. It seems like the game has kind of been rushed with a lot of features promised to be added "soon after release". Not to mention that once the initial rush wears off, I'm not sure how much longevity it would have. I haven't really seen any mention of an "endgame" so far. Are they going to have something like raids? Do you just keep doing small group PvE missions? Those PvP scenarios? Or what?
I've been debating over whether to preorder it since I don't have any other MMOs going now, but I think I'm just gonna wait and try the open beta first.

Steam gets their own extra as well as the other that is apparently for all digital distributions. Think I may switch over to Steam from Amazon. Beta is getting close!
Quote:
Steam Exclusive Pre-Purchase Offer
Chromodynamic Armor: This armor is based on technology brought back from the Delta Quadrant by U.S.S. Voyager and is personal body armor that improves the damage and critical hits of your energy weapons. The following are the bonus attributes for the armor:
Steam pre-purchase customers will also receive access to the Open Beta and the Early Start Program, which allows players to get a leg up on other interstellar explorers by accessing the Star Trek universe the weekend prior to the game launch.
Star Trek Online Digital Deluxe Edition Exclusives
The Star Trek Online Digital Deluxe Edition offers such bonuses as five exclusive in-game items as well as the ability to play as a “Joined Trill” – a symbiote that grants you several lifetimes of experience. The five exclusive in-game items include:
* Original Star Trek Uniform Set: Three uniforms from the original series (blue, red, yellow). * Exclusive “KHAAAN!” Emote: An unforgettable moment from the second Star Trek Film. This exclusive emote allows players to relive Kirk’s unforgettable moment of fury, with the timeless cry… “KHAAAN!” * Exclusive Klingon Blood Wine Toast Emote: Raise a glass like a Klingon! Greet other players with an exclusive Klingon gesture –the blood wine toast. * Unique Registry Prefix: Give your ship the coveted NX prefix, seen only on a handful of elite Starfleet vessels like the Defiant, 22nd century Enterprise, and Prometheus. * Unique Ship Item: Automated Defense Battery. This Tactical Module grants any ship a passive 360 arc attack power with a short range.
Well I am all loaded up. Got the Steam DDE version when I began to suspect EB Games Canada was not going to get the open-beta promo. Of course this is an open Beta, having come from the the open beta of Aion some people (not here though) need to remember that. Too many freak out when servers go down for work during open betas and beging threatening lawsuits etc. Of course these people doing the threatening are (so they claim) all programmers with many major developments under their belts.
We can post in game names here shortly and try to maybe get a little organized.

One day the West will fall. But if the Liberty for which we fight is taken up by the world then the West will not have failed.
Just started the fileplanet client download... here's hoping that it'll be done by the time I'm home from work.
Edit: Download speeds are terrible so far. Looking like it may take 2-3 days just to download the client. Edit2: Well, if you didn't preorder and hope to try the game anytime soon, the torrent looks like the best bet until other mirrors come online. Fileplanet's download is slow and cryptics absolutely crawls.
I think the prefered way to add friends is to do it via the website, and not ingame.
Ingame you have to look for CharName@Handle. Online you can add their handle (not the account login, but the nickname you create). It will then add all chars as they are created as your friends.
Ok there may be non disclosure restrictions on content and features but has anyone here started playing yet? any first impressions that yer allowed to post about? I am downloading the game now (time Warner rocks)
If it's open beta, it would be silly to try to have any type of NDA. I am curious about it. I have heard some things about it, but not to much that is positive right now. I am going to wait a bit this time before I play something because I have been burned to many times with MMO's.

I've started it, but I'm only minutes into the training "mission". Highest settings are pretty hard on equipment. I know I don't have the best video card, but it's no slouch for any game I have. However, video settings are incredibly customizable. Went with high over "very high" or whatever and the game really looks nice for an MMO. I'd bet they optimize it more later, I saw in the chat box several people questioning this. So far controls seem basic fare for MMO, but this is an on-foot section, not ship to ship combat. Characters: you can go with a preset race and skills or you can go custom, which I think is the natural thing to do. More appearance options than I think necessary, kind of like Oblivion, but you have a nice list of skills to pick 4 from. Some more angled toward Soldier, some scientific and others engineering (what I did). You can mix them up, but might be better to do that later. I think I read that you can't add to your skills during the beta, only after and that levels are capped at 16 and only a limited amount of space that lends itself to these lower levels.
My name on the service: RawKryptonite Character: Defcon Won Blue skinned engineer extraordinaire with the Geordi La Forge eye clippie thing. Couldn't resist. LOL
I've played it a bit now, yesterday and today. Currently Lieutenant Rank 7 (Each Command Grade has 10 levels).
It does capture quite a bit of the Star Trek feeling for me, visually and in play.
Starship Combat: Reminds me quite a bit of Starfleet COmmand, with less systems to fiddle with. Movement is primarily 2D, with some elevation accessible, allowing you to get above and below ships and items. But you can't roll your ship and such, only yaw and pitch. Each ship has 4 shields (aft, front, starboard, port), and a set number of slots you can put various equipment into (the starter ship has 2 front weapon slots, and 1 aft, for instance), like better shields, engines, etc.
The combat does lend itself to tactics if you are in a group working together. Fire needs to be concentrated on the same side of the shields, etc.
Ground Combat: THis is the least polished bit so far, a bit on the simple side, but I still like it. Mostly consists of shooting stuff, or scanning it.
I've only played a Federation Officer sofar, as it's mostly focused on PvE, while the Klingons are the full PvP faction.
Will make up my mind in the coming weeks if I'll subscribe or not when it comes out.
Right now I am working on a science officer named Setsuna. I like the Trek atmosphere which they captured quite well. Starship combat while not as complex as the old Starfleet Command series isn't bad for an MMO. Ground combat is a little clunky, although I don't know if that is design, lag or my computer.
