now a good 1+ years old, this latest trade/fight/explore 1st person POV/cockpit (yes, with mods, though i admit to preferring the default presentation, where the nose of the ship is visible onscreen but there are no cockpit bars obscuring the view or the onscreen hud) space sim is probably the best of the genre now, in terms of polish, depth, graphics, and current generation production values. relevant links: egosoft.com http://forum.egosoft.com/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=4407d60211703d0e429cf62c26658cd6http://forum.egosoft.com/viewforum.php?f=94&sid=4407d60211703d0e429cf62c26658cd6 (script and mod forum, to see what greatness is out there from the community) i am running the 2.5 version of the game, with both DDTC mod (adds new ships, stations, missions, sector backgrounds), Cmod3 (a combat mod that overhauls the combat in the game, though i can't tell you how at this point), and a few cheat scripts. the game is stable, runs well, and looks fantastic. and for those who have been put off by the ponderous, trade-centric aspect of the prior x games, this one allows the player to quite easily play as a fighter, earning credits through combat, so there's no need to slog through the game as a lowly freighter pilot. the combat is pretty great, imo. x3:tc is likely the best cockpit-based space sim we're going to see for a while (until infinity, whenever that comes out, and jumpgate, which doesn't even allow for a cockpit-based pov yet, as far as i know, and which is online only), so give it a look. ps- yeah, piper, i'm talkin' to you :-)

Get the MARS turret script, one of the coolest mods out there for X3TC, works great with CMod3 as well.

It automates missle defense on fighters. On capital ships it not only automates the turrets it will select from the weapons in your cargo for the most appropriate armament for the current target.

ahh, ok. so basically, my fighter turret will launch a mosquito missile at any incoming missile, without me having to target the missile and manually launch my mosquito? correct? and it will select the mosquito, even if i have another missile selected?
that would be sweet.

Yep, you don't even need a turret for it to work.

Mouse is a must have on a laptop regardless, that is the first thing I do with any laptop, a wireless laptop mouse is as essential as a power cord as far as I am concerned my .02 Speaking of games for the laptop, I might have to pick this one up...

PG, to play x3R or x3TC with cockpits, assuming I get the 'gold edition' (Gold Edition includes X3: Reunion 2.5, X3: Terran Conflict 2.0, "The Aldrin Missions", and a soundtrack CD) and I update X3TC to the 2.5 version, do I have to install some mods in order to fly with cockpits or are they included in these version?

spydoc- you'd need to install the mod to fly w/ cockpits. it's VERY easy to install most mods as fake patches. basically, rename the .cat and .cat file to a number above that of the highest named .cat and .dat file in the main x3:tc (or x3:r) folder. in other words, if the vanilla game's highest is 08, then the cockpit .cat and .dat files are renamed as 09 each and placed in that folder. bingo, no need to select the cockpits as a mod, b/c they run as a fake patch. link to 2 different cockpit mods: http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=254635&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=262446&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0http://www.its-schiffswerft.homepage.t-online.de/html/english.html (screenshots) i prefer the 1st mod, b/c the 2nd takes up too much of the screen in many cases.

yeah, they have. x3:tc is, in my opinion, the game designers finally "getting it" as far as user accessibility is concerned. it's also a ton easier to earn credits in the game and find missions. i think the interface is a damn site better, with pretty much everything available via a left-hand menu system. x3:r i'd gave a 6/10 for in terms of this, x3:tc i'd give an 8.5 to.

Thanks for the linkie's, PG. Ditto what Speedo said, agreed that was the reason for me as well. I still have a copy of X3R sitting in the box, could never get past the User Interface enough to start enjoying the story...
Hmm, like I said, I'm looking into picking up the Gold edition. Looks promising, nice cockpit mods as well.

This is really a great space sim if you haven't tried it I join in to highly recommend it. You can spend hours and not even know it! It's like most sims though, you spend a lttle time learning the controls and what does what and then it becomes second nature. Take a look at this link for all kinds of info and downloads. The Ultimate X resource and guides list - last updated 13/01/2010 http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=162408Thanks for the link ot the cockpit mod, I'm gonna give it a look.
