I loved the originals, but not sure if I really NEED WOE2 and WOI2. What's better? Better AI? Better Dynamic campaigns? I know the visuals are improved, but is that it? Still the same radio chatter?

I just picked up the combo pack (which includes all 4 games) last night, so my analysis is somewhat incomplete. That said, series 2 still feels like series 1, but the integration is a lot nicer. You can have all of the versions in the same folder (the combo pack in fact installs them this way), and you can access all of the stock campaigns, missions, and planes through any of the exes (e.g. sf2, sf2i, sf2e, sf2v).
However, mods are done through the User's XP/Vista profile, and each exe creates its own structure in the user profile. This way you can have up to 4 separate mod settings per user profile, or you can even just leave one as stock, do another as a full-mod, etc. Additionally, mod integration has been made easier with plug and play weapons, though I haven't been able to fully test further enhancements.
If you're on the fence, the $50 for the combo pack is IMHO well worth it.

If you are getting Vista/Win 7 then they are for you - and i would expect them to be multicore supported in the future - whereas cant gurantee the 1st series will get anything else.
Out of the box they have well about 8 years of improvements over the original SF1 - but main things are new 3d cockpits (pits for different blocks too) with more functionality, new 3D models, new avionics RWR code, support for DX10/11, better AI, , higher res terrains, new a/c (A-1H/J, F-8C/D/J/H, A-7C/D/E, kfir C1...etc )
Lastly they are dirt cheap - check out the combo pack offer

Considering the support for the older games ended last year, yeah, getting the Gen 2 games is a good idea.

Alright. I got it! Looks better, runs smoother. I spent a while modding the stock F-16 and Europe campaign to get that plane in there with a USAF skin. Made a 1981 campaign after a little trial and error. Downloaded NF4, but the included planes are hit-or-miss: can't really compete with the stock ones in the looks/feel category. The Europe terrain mod is amazing. Looks great. A must download for sure.

Try NF4+, it's adapted for SF2 where NF4 wasn't, but that's at Combatace.com though. You talking about Stary's new one? Oh yes it's great

Oh yes it's great I did download the NF4+, and while it's awesome that they've compiled all this stuff and added a bunch of NATO planes and air forces that were glaringly absent, alot of the planes are magically maneuverable and have unfair advantages over the stock TW models. Plus, compared to the new hi-res pits, the usermade ones can look cartoonish or maybe like they're from a sim from 15 years ago. And yeah, I was talking about the Stary terrain mod. All I can say is wow.

The new stock pits just about blow away everything that's been done before.

All I can say is wow. I agree, it's very beautiful. As for the mod... well TW sims is a "lite" sim thats starting to get some complexity in the scope of things. Granted... yeah alot of things need to be addressed, but he's slowly working towards it. Basically TK said it as a "nifty game to fly nifty planes". Note that this is a misquote but does sum up the game method. But as for the maneuverability... you have to understand that some put the effort into the FM. Besides, alot of the newer aircraft just have better FMs. I've started on the F-4E some more and it's hell to turn in a turning fight. But you take a Super Hornet and you can pull tighter than an F-4E. It's just progress in technology that's all. And there is a Hard Mode but from what I read it's not all cracked up to be, so I stick to Normal.

I have 'em all. Very convenient to have all four on my Win 7, quad core machine. All games/missions load like greased lightening. The graphics are beautiful. But the games seem to play identically. The same list of aircraft on all four. Only negative is that it feels repetitive, especially with the same list of planes. I would've preferred different flyables in all four to make the games somewhat different. It feels like if you fly one game there is no reason to fly the other three games.
Does anyone know if the campaigns in the four games play differently?

I'm asking myself the same question. But I'm more torn between the regular SF2 and the "Europe" edition.
What's easier to mod with the currently avaiable free stuff? Europe -> Desert or Desert -> Europe?
I really love flying over Dhimar/Paran since it's such a beautiful, abstract, yet still believable theater that offers lots of possibilities (also, I'm a big fan of JSF_Aggie's Harrier campaign).
But then again, Europe seems to receive more attention in terms of mods and the prospect of having a NATO vs WP clash over my homecountry has been tempting me ever since WoE. If I was only getting one, I would get 'Europe. It seems to be the most dramatic theatre and has the best mix of planes. Serious groundpounders like the A-10 and A-7 plus the F-15 which is amazing for late- '70s technology and don't forget all of the MiGs can be made flyable with some small downloads. But really, you'll want all of them, eventually.

I'd then simply rip the terrain from SF1 and put it into SF2.

While I will not argue that Ver 2. did bring some enhancements, as an owner of Ver 1 and an XP user I would probaby take a pass on Ver 2. You actually lose some stock aircraft in both Europe V2 and Vietnam V2.
If you don't own the sims at this point, though, the combo pack is a no-brainer.
