I know this isn't the right forum for this, but CH gets much more traffic than the event photography forum. But if it must be moved then it must be moved.
I'm looking for a decent digital camera that can withstand Afghanistan's harsh environment. I figure it's asking alot, but I'm gonna house it in a Pelican case when I carry it around. Nothing ridiculously expensive, I'm looking to spend less than $400 on it.
Also I'm looking at options for a helmet camera. I did have one of those cameras that mounted to the rails on my M4 but the supposedly waterproof housing died in the heavy rain and stopped working. Waste of $180.
Any suggestions? I'm a grunt and as such these things are gonna get banged up. Alot. I'm leaving in a few weeks so it's gonna be exposed to cold too then godawful heat later on in the deployment.

-Justin Here is your answer, the Goprocamera Check out the videos, they use these cameras in RC planes with amazing results. If it can handle the surf you will have no issues.

New Casio ruggedised camera out this month: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0911/09111801casioexg1.aspLightweight, dust, water and shock proof. Has a video mode and uses the tiny MicroSD cards which won't take up any room. Downside is that it doesn't take AAs, so you'll be relying on some power from somewhere every few days to keep the battery charged.

Justin, I'm proud of you Marine. I wish they had digital cameras when I was in. So many great memories were missed because not being able to capture them. As important as the pictures, make sure you get addresses not only of your buddies, but another address where you can reach if people move. I lost track, because not having an established alternate. Make sure you all register in to the people finder in military.com or whatever the Marine equivalent to AKO (Army Knowledge Online). Years later it will be a good way to reestablish contact.
No camera advice from me.

FST, No concrete advice here either, but a couple suggestions. First, I'd get a camera that runs on AA batteries rather than the proprietary ones. That way you don't have to have a recharger, if the batts run low, take 'em out and put in some more. Less fuss and you don't to worry about losing the recharger.
Next, I'd look for one that has a pretty good zoom feature on it. Most of the point & shoots have at least a 3x optical zoom, but I think I'd want more than that. Maybe 8x.
ps, I put a bump post over in the Photography Forum pointing to this one. Those guys in there are darned good with photography.

I know very little on P&S camera's which is what your looking for. There are a few threads already in there that you can read or like 20mm pointed out, point them to this thread.
All I wanted to say was Thanks for your service and good luck!

Try the Canon PowerShot D10. It doesn't take the greatest pictures in low light, but it's nearly indestructable. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_d10.asp"Canon's first waterproof digital compact is claimed to be waterproof up to 10 meters, freeze proof up to -10 degrees, shockproof when dropped from a height of 1.22 meters and dust proof. In addition, there are a range of optional protective accessories available. The camera has a 12.1MP sensor, 3x optical zoom and a 2.5" LCD, and includes Smart Auto Mode, Face Select & Track, Blink Detection and Face Self-timer."

If you don't mind shopping at Best Buy pick up any camera that you like and get their extended warrenty policy. My hubby took his Sony cybershot DSC-W90 over to Afghanistan and it worked great even after he got some sand in the lens. We took it back to Best Buy and they replaced the lens for no expense.

Here is your answer, the Goprocamera Check out the videos, they use these cameras in RC planes with amazing results. If it can handle the surf you will have no issues. Anyone here ever used these? I doubt I can do their helmet mounted cameras, cause I need to keep goggles & NVG stuff mounted on there at all times. But I was looking at their Wrist HERO cam and from the way it looks, I could mount it to my goggle strap on the helmet, giving me a side mount which would be perfect. Dunno how heavy the thing is though, can't have a camera dangling off the side of my helmet ya know. As for the handhelds, thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming. And Vertigo, I'm guessing those Mini MALICE clips weave into MOLLE gear? I've seen some TT gear get issued out to us, but I never got any so IDK how any of it works. -Justin

yes, you weave them just like a standard molle attachment. They are tougher to weave as they are hard plastic though.

I`ll bet if you contacted the GoPro company and told them you are about to be deployed to Afghanistan and am looking to take along a heavy duty camera. Maybe they would even offer you one to field test. You never know, they have no videos from Iraq or Afghanistan. Good luck and stay safe. Send us back some pictures and video when you get the chance.
