"B17 goes Hollywood" would be a good title me thinks. Don't like the polished bird, it's a bomber and not a strangely shaped mirror.

Paint guys used to polish the Northwest 727s after a maintenance check. All by hand IIRC.

What gets me is that the museum spent small fortune getting it polished but refused the protectant sealer because of budget problems.

By the way, how much do you think it cost them for the polish job? I am thinking a couple grand.

Couple Grand??? No way... More like 10 or 20. 50lbs. of polish would cost almost a thousand bux. 20 guys working for 4 or 5 days... At least 10G's. Probably more.

Call me crazy, but I liked the satin sheen better than the high polish.

I recently watched "Twelve O'Clock High" so I especially enjoyed those pics.

I prefer the unpolished one also. Isn't that kind of bad in the long run? The aluminum oxide is actually a protective layer, you are just removing metal, eventually (if you keep polishing regularly) you will not have any left, esp if it is not clearcoated to protect it. It is pretty in the polished state, more like a statue or a work of art though.

Same here. Looks more natural. I bet no B-17 ever flew into combat newly polished. Or maybe they did try that once, to dazzle the German fighter pilots biggrin

I tell ya one thing though, one plane that does look the part when newly polished is the Red Bull DC-6 from the Red Bull collection in Salzburg, Austria. They maintain their planes to an insane standard that has to be seen to be believed! And they keep all their planes like that ALL THE TIME. Here's from the airshow here in August:

It's pretty cool to see behind the scenes on that.

The plane looked familiar so I did some checking, and below is a shot I got of that same bird at the Planes of Fame show back in 2008. The fuselage looks kind of shiny, but not the wings. I wonder if this is between polishings or if that's something they just started doing recently.

I bet it got at least a few more KIAS from the polishing job, or a bit of an increase in range.

Just in case the bright yellow horizontal & vertical stabs, wingtips, and nacelles aren't enough to make it stand out. It's always cloudy over Germany anyway, so what would reflect off the polished aluminum? LOL

Love it, great story! Can't decide if I prefer the before or after.

I do have one issue though when the commentary says "Fuddy is starting to reveal some of his shine" that ain't no he, she is defintiely a she. Beautiful!
