So my cyberpower rig shipped. I opted against a CREATIVE sound card, because I have a fairly new one in my current computer. You probably saw this coming, but here are my questions: A) What exactly is the 7.1 dolby audio offered by the HD5870? B) The ASUS board I ordered also claims to have dolby audio C) Is the Creative card (an Audigy- basic card but new enough) worth it? D) Where does a fellah plug in his headphones? I use headphones (nice pair of Logitech 's G35 support Dolby 7.1) all but exclusively. In my current system I simply disabled the motherboard audio through the bios and used the Creative. What would you all suggest. I think my question comes down to where to plug in my headphones! Thanks guys- d.

Isn't the 7.1 audio on the graphics card meant to be funnelled through the HDMI port? I think most new ati cards do that, right? I'm not sure if they just funnel on board sound, or if they use some type of software based 'sound card.' I though the ati audio solution was just for funnelling ongboard sound or digital sound from dvds and blueray movies. For instance, 'ATI HDMI Audio Driver' driver, from here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/pages/hdmi_xp.aspx?&lang=EnglishI may be totally off here. Someone else can pipe in?

Since you ask.
Both my ASUS and GigaByte on board sound on my ATI motherboards are great in every respect. I particularly like sound system control software that came with the motherboards. Starting with Vista and multi-core processors, Windows is designed around on-board "software" sound. The CPU overhead is trivial. I don't even consider a sound card in my systems -- but, in the past, I would not have a system without one.
In fact, I only use a graphics card in a gaming system. The ATI on-board graphics will serve every other need -- or so it seems from my experience. Two of our home systems use on-board graphics and on-board sound. Now, every board I buy has both. Yup, the day of dedicated cards for everyday operation is virtually over. Just need to put a quality HDTV tuner on the MB and I won't have to buy any cards.

I assume you have some sort of optical or coaxial output on your onbard card. The problem is you still need an external receiver to truly enjoy "real" 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby/DTS. What soundcards usually do with stereo sources like games, they just upmix the sound. You got sound from all channels but its just upmixed stereo. If you watch DVDs you only need the receiver, since the source is already AC3, you can use programs like AC3filter for that. You can easily test this, open VLC to play DVD and select A/52 over SPDIF as audio device, you wont hear much unless you have an external receiver or use AC3filter.
But with games, you need a soundcard that can actually convert your stereo source into Dolby/DTS signals for your receiver. C-Media chips do that nicely. I got the overpriced Razer Barracuda AC-1 but you get the same quality from lower priced cards like the Club 3D Theatron Agrippa 7.1.
There are small enconders like the Creative DTTS-30 which I use. You connect it with the optical output of a soundcard and it plays the part of the receiver with Dolby/DTS signals for any source. Some good headphones with that and you have pretty DTS sound.
Don't know about the soundchips on the ATI stuff though.
Edit: didn't see the part about the Audigy. What kind of Audigy? The Audigy 2 ZS I had was pretty decent for an external 7.1 system I had.
