I have not been able to play Crimson Skies for a while now due to Nvidia graphics drivers that broke something in the game on Windows XP. The only way to fix it was to use some really old drivers and I was not willing to do that. But now that Win 7 is out, I guess the drivers don't break it anymore. I even found a couple of patches that fix the corruption in the menus and let you set your own game resolution too.

Great news speedbump. I loved the alternative parallel world thing of CS on the old xbox and in a moment of nostalgia recently I acquired the PC version but had the same issues as you after installing on XP with nvidia gpu. A real disappointment and unplayable. I guess this is a bit of a nudge to upgrade to 7 eh wink

More vids please Smile2 I'm only familiar with the xbox version which, from what your vids show at least, is vastly different to the PC version.

I'm going to post them all from 1 through the last on Youtube. There are two patches. One is from MS and the other is a hack for the resolution and corruption of the menus.

I got Crimson Skies the other day but just can't get it running. Can you give me a hand with it? I feel like I'm missing one of the instructions.
Win 7 64.
Installed the game, ran the 1.02 patch, extracted the csfix.7z files to the root folder.

I have compat mode set to Win 98se and run as admin. Have also tried running as Win 85.
I've gotten the small menu as expected, but I either get the strobing white screen at mission briefing (doesn't go away, and can't see anything) or it goes to the game, but all I see are wireframes of the zeppelin, or I did get it to run the game on software rendering, but horrible color and pixelated.
Usually the main menu is just the red flag, I have to alt-tab out and back in to see the menu options.

I'm choosing Accelerator Primary Display, and the drop down at 1024 x 768, but my understanding is that the text file overwrites that?

csfix looks like this:

Quote:
[Main]

;Set to 1 to use a 32 bit render target, to solve issues with broken dithering
;Corrupts the intro screen, and causes a couple of artifacts on menus
Use32BitColour=1

;Set to 1 to force a specific screen resolution
;Menu's don't look as good, but it removes screen transitions and lets you use non 4:3 resolutions
;Warning: Has a tendency to induce mild epilepsy on the briefing screens
OverrideRes=0
ScreenWidth=1280
ScreenHeight=1024

;Disable usage of the high performance counter
;Fixes the crash on startup on some newer cpu's, can also be fixed by running in win95 compatibility mode
DisablePerfCounter=1

;Force NONPOW2CONDITIONAL texture caps
;Fixes blocky text on menus, and in game crashes when text is displayed
ForceNP2=1

;Forces the use of a single processor core
;Fixes threading issues on multi-core processors
SingleCoreMode=1

Any ideas?

Ok, I forgot to enable the custom res but most importantly I was using the orginal .exe to start it. Used the Application-1 (whatever it is) and it started up. Good stuff!
Thanks for putting those files up before.

I'm running in Windows 95 mode and have done everything you've done but I still can't play the game. I run it at my native res yet all the colours are messed up and the game only fills a portion of my screen.

Aha, I managed to fix my problem.

I will post the solution tomorrow. I did have to experiment a bit.

I know, this game is awesome. partything

Right so, here's the fix for me.

1. Install Crimson Skies.

2. Run the 1.02 patch.

3. Open the game, select hardware driver, put all of the settings to max.

4. Take the new 'crimson.exe' file AND the 'csfix.ini' file from the 'csfix-old.7z' folder (which is exactly the same version a previous user posted about here) and paste them in your Crimson Skies folder.

5. Copy and paste the 'csfix.dll' file from the new 'csfix.7z' folder (which is newer version than the previous poster was using) into your Crimson Skies folder.

6. Finally, copy and paste all the lines of code that are in the new 'csfix.ini' file over into the old 'csfix.ini' file (which should already be in your Crimson Skies folder, see step 4.)

THE WEBSITE FOR THE FILES IS HERE:

http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net/index.html (Look down the side and you'll see 'csfix (Crimson skies)'. Underneath are the 2 downloads you'll need).

The game should now run fine (although the menus are a bit messed up).

Could someone sticky this thread and put the solution I listed above to the first post please?

If there was ever a game that deserved a remake, it is THIS one. I picture part flight sim, part steam punk style, first person shooter. Rise Of Flight meets Bioshock Infinite. Would that be cool, or what?

I read a couple of years ago that someone had bought the rights to the game just so they could remake it and it never materialized.
