We had a Korean foreign exchange student in 2004 that decided to stay in the US for college and is currently going to the University of Washington. We have stayed close since he was here as a 15 year old.
About a year ago he decided he needed a car. Of course he couldn't just get some beater to get him back and forth to his classes. He had to go out and buy a 2004 Acura TSX at 15000 dollars. His dad in Korea bought the car. I thought it was stupid but hey, it isn't my money.
Well, dumb dumb decided he didn't want to pay the extra money for comprehensive insurance for his car and only kept liability on his 15 grand car. You can guess what happened next.
I got the call Sunday, he ran his car into the back end of another car. I just went up to Seattle with a tow dolly and pulled the car back. Wasted a whole day but I don't know of any reliable mechanic that would touch the car in Seattle so I drug it all the way from Seattle to Olympia.
Great, now got to figure out what to do with the car.
ps your not going to give him one of your re-built cars are ya?-)
Not only no but he!! no.
He is walking from now on. His dad already told him that once the car is fixed it is going up for sale. He already had a fender bender not a week before that he had to report to his insurance company. With this crackup I highly doubt he will get any insurance short of from places like this:

Sell it cheap, get him a '90 Ford Bronco or something. Give him the real American experience and let him keep that running, he'll appreciate his next car all the more. LOL Can't imagine giving a kid that age an Acura, even if it's a few year old.
Those aren't quite "Trunk Monkey" quality, but they're darned funny.
Don't be too hard on him Tom, we were all dumb kids once. I remember the time I crashed my parents American Rambler into the back of a stopped city bus. Yes, that's right. I was staring at some girls sitting up on the hood of a car at the corner and lost total concentration on what was happening right in front of me. Bus went through the intersection and stopped on the other side. He stopped, I didn't. Whang.
Pat Tillman (1976-2004): 4 years Arizona State University, graduated with high honors. 5 seasons National Football League player, Arizona Cardinals. Forever United States Army Ranger.
Oh, I've done the same thing myself. I came back from Basic Training and AIT to pick up my 1978 Chevrolet El Camino SS. My mom and dad had the car for the six months I was gone.
I came home and was cruising with a buddy. Just like you Tom I noticed some pretty girls off to one side and didn't pay attention to what was in front of me. I rear ended an LTD, did about 1000 dollars damage to the car.
Of course the difference was that I had to pay for the repairs. I was younger than my exchange student but that didn't matter. I also knew better than to drop full coverage from the car. I probably wouldn't be so upset except for the fact that the nitwit dropped his comprehensive and collision coverage not a month ago. Now he is going to have to ask his father for 5-6k to fix this car just so he can sell it. I am going to see if I can find a used hood and front end parts to hopefully limit the cost of this thing but I am still going to have to go get the stuff.
I'm still driving the same daily I bought some 14 years ago, but with new engine transplant, completely reworked suspension, transmission and interior. And I can foresee hanging on to the car for a long time. Bought it all from my own pocket. Didn't have to ask the old man for nothing. I used to walk to and fro college or take public transportation, rain or shine.
You are right about kids these days. They are somewhat stupid, lazy and over-provided. I never had that luxury even if my family was well-off.
And the 18 year old P-platers on the road these days......why, they are either of two catergories....slow and unpredicatable, fast and reckless.
