Some other Navy movies are worthy of mention:
Damn the Defiant! Away All Boats PT-109 Billy Budd (maybe too "talky" for some) Corvette K-225 Action in the North Atlantic

There's some good ones there, PHiLA. Billy Budd is one of my favorite short stories and we watched the movie version when I was in high school. I saw PT-109 when I was in Boot Camp, and Damn the Defiant somewhere along the way too...

"The Hunt for the Graf Spee" aka "The Battle of the River Plate" was on TCM on Saturday/early sunday am. It's british film from the mid 50s directed by Michael Powell ("Colonel Blimp", "A matter of Life Death (aka "Stairway to Heaven" etc.) that is pretty much a docudrama on the Graf Spee business. I had heard alot of good things about this movie, but couldn't really get past the fact that USS Salem was the stand in for Graf Spee, with its radar arrays and "modern" AAA mounts. Also seemed kind of boring, but I think alot of that had to do with the fact that I was fighting to stay awake while switching back and forth between the Angels/Yankees game. Tried to tape most of it as I was just too tired.

I did finally see "Sink the Bismarck" several years ago and I really liked it. Yeah, it was obvious they were using models in some of the scenes but I just had to keep in mind that the film came out in 1960.

"Bismark" is the better movie from what I saw. Can't believe you only saw it just a few years ago. It was always on the independent "U" stations when I was kid.

All of this recent Navy talk on SimHQ has got me thinking about all of the great and terrible movies I've seen that centered around a military naval theme. What would you say are 5 of the best you've seen and 5 of the worst you've seen? My best 1. Hunt for Red October 2. Master & Commander 3. Tora Tora Tora 4. Das Boot 5. Sink the Bismarck My worst 1. U-571 - So full of cliches its absurd. 2. McHale's Navy 3. Pearl Harbor 4. Down Periscope 5. I'm drawing a blank right now but I'll remember my #5 pick soon. ADMIN EDIT: Blade, watch it. You're pushing the limits of acceptable behavior. Again. The pink sub is AWESOME. I like Yamato, and the enemy below dislike run silent, run deep

add "In Harm's Way" to the good list. Wow, I just looked it up and noticed it was directed by the highly talented Otto Preminger and starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. I must watch this one!

Kirk Douglas's character in it was the basis for Col. Tigh in new BSG. That's right! I remember Ron Moore mentioning that in one of the season 1 commentaries.

I never liked "In Harms Way" all that much because the model work can pretty bad at times (the doll crewmen on the model PT-Boats is pretty blatant etc). However, the women in the movie were pretty attractive. It also has some goofy island names (like "kakabootu") and the love interest subplots didn't seem to make much sense sometimes.
I don't really see much of a resemblence between the Kirk and Tighe characters other than the alcohol. Kirk is a real cad in the movie--with very serious repercussions.
As an aside, I was thinking about "Sink the Bismark" and how as kids we always use to make fun of the difference between the German and British "talkers" during the battle scenes. The German guy was this burly dude who would yell "Feuer!" while the British counterpart, in snappy uniform and ascot would simply say "Shoot!"

Also the Admiral Lutjens character kinda comes off like an early version of Galactic Emperor Palpitine: "Good!...Good!...That is good!"

I have to differ on the "Midway" thumbs up. I went to see it in the movies and woah Nelley, it is a stinker. The best part was ripped whole from "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo", the rest was a "travesty of a mockery of a sham". TBD's going to attack without arms, turning into TBFs. Japanese American actors with a 'Hey Dude" California accent. And the very worst was the SENSE-AROUND!" , which featured a subwoofer attached to the movie seat that rumbled at the oddest of times. Unfortunatelty to me it was a typical late '60s early '70s historical epic that had virtually no history in it. As good as "Tora Tora Tora" was (yin)there had to be a bad (yang) reaction. You know, basic Newtonian stuff. (Also in the yin-yang catagory was "A Bridge Too Far" vs "Battle of the Buldge") , but that is for the best war movie thread. You missed "A Wing and A Prayer", great propaganda on the same subject. And, "The Bridges At Toko-Ri" And "Flight of the Intruder" And, Cary Grant's other sub movie "Destination Tokyo"
