Howdy all!

How is everyone?!

Apologies for not being around much - life got very busy recently.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Since my last photo post back in March (eek!) I've done quite a bit of photography work over the summer and just recently got back from a 2 week trip in the US. However, I will start with the most important topic for me this year and that is of the disbandment of 43 (Fighter) Squadron from RAF Leuchars.

Those who have followed my posts over the years will recognise RAF Leuchars and of the many trips that I took whilst still a student bum. Well unfortunately the bean counters got their say and 43(F) were disbanded in July earlier than originally planned.

The squadron had spent the last 20 years at the forefront of the UK's air defences, flying the Tornado F.3 from RAF Leuchars. Even more tragic was that two of Squadron's aircrew were lost during a training mission only a week prior to the official disbandment of the Squadron. frown

I spent quite bit of time over May, June and July doing 800 mile round trips travelling from Beford to Leuchars to capture as much as I could before they disappeared for good.

The other Tornado F.3 squadron based at Leuchars, 111 (F) "The Tremblers" are still with us until probably around early 2011 but we all know how quickly things can change. The base is currently transforming for Typhoon operations to start late 2010 when 6 Squadron will stand up. I have my fingers crossed that 43 will be back as the next Typhoon squadron after 6!!

Any way enough chat, here are some pics!

Nice to see you back!

All nice shots, but #6, and from 22 on are the standouts for me.

great shot's as usual Andy.

40 years of continuous service at Leuchars as "Scotland's own fighter squadron" (originally formed at Stirling in 1916) gone in the stroke of an accountant's pen ... frown
Hopefully they'll return on Typhoon.

Sweet shots Andy, some serious great lighting. Your going to make the unit proud with capturing those shots. Nicely done!

Hey Phil! I assume you came over for Flying Legends this year? Pretty good wasn't it! wink

I used my 17-40mm F/4 L on my 40D for shots 17 and 18.

highly unlikely that you'll see an F.3 as only 1 squadron of them is left now & they'll all be gone in about a year frown

Of course you might get a Typhoon instead smile

Hello Andy!

great to see you here again smile
yes, my better half and I came over to Duxford this July and what a show it was;
I got to talk a little to Ed Shipley and one of the FW-190 crew and my gf also enjoyed her second Duxford show even more than last years event;
of course the show itself was a marvel, this was maybe the first show ever since I own a decent digital cam that I dropped it and just watched the flying and enjoyed the show, because at times there was so much going on that it was impossible to focus at a specific aircraft;
of course I got some nice shots of the FW-190, I guess I need to post some more of that bird here wink

btw, I am planning to get myself a nice wideangle lense myself, and currently I am interested in the new Sigma 10-22mm f3.5 thingie; but that 17-40mm baby of yours looks great too;
or should I take the 100mm f2.8 Macro lense? well, in December I will know;
have you eyed the 7D too already? will be my new cam body sometime next year smile

what did you shoot in the States?
show us some wink

cheers
BL
