Yes isn't that a good question. I'm sure other guys and gals have noticed that JG27 always flew 109s witch I think is great but how did they do this? Was it some kind of done deal to always ship JG27 109s?

It was the same with JG52, JG53 and JG77. I don't think there was a special plan for that, but the aircraft were delivered according to which role the Geschwader/Gruppe played when aircraftstandards were being updated.

Why change if you don't have to? Switching types means retraining both pilots and groundcrew, which takes time.

Since the Germans used the Bf 109 until the end of the war (because of the poor high altitude performance of the Fw 190A and bottlenecks in engine production) it's only logical that some units flew it for the duration.

There were plans at the end of the war to switch the Luftwaffe fighter force entirely to the Me 262, Ta 152, and Do 335 but they were of course never implemented.

Yes.. certainly practicality played the biggest role..

You have to admit, it's legendary status is hard to escape. Though I could stand a bit of variety, posterity shows that it would have been the most numerous. Speaking for the game itself and despite it's RL problems with swing and such on take off , it's got to be one of the most comfortable planes to fly in the game. (The "E" being my favorite.)

Now that I think of it I can't remember ever seeing a 190 in any of those other squadrons either Cpt.

Breaking news: in the Flugzeugbestand und Bewegungsmeldungen for JG27's Stabstaffel there are two Fw 190D listed in December 1944.

It seems a lot of squadrons had a mix of 109s and 190s. I guess one reason could be that the 109 (and later Fw 190D) often flew top cover for the 190A, and it was probably easier to organize this within the same squadron.

I think that the Doras seen in some "109 Gruppen" was almost always delivered to the stab and might be an indication that those units were supposed to gradually change over to the inline-engined Fw190's/Ta152's but the plans were never fulfilled due to shortage and the war ending.

Walter Krupinski talks in my book "JG26 Top Guns Of The Luftwaffe" what a great plane the 190 was but says for basic flying I like the 109.

Is it a coincidence that these happen to be amongst my all time favourite German units of WW2 biggrin ? The only exception is the mighty JG26, then again they used 109s in their high altitude and Jabo staffeln up untill pretty late in the war...

Cheers

Nico

Many pilots got so attached to the 109 they strongly objected to being converted to the 190 even though in many ways the 190 was superior. Some units were successful in keeping the 109 and this may have been the case here.
