How do you set that up with the farmer? Call ahead or just go up there and land?

I'm usually polite and call first, but he told me that he doesn't mind people stopping by. He hosts a "fly-in" every now and then. Even showed me where he hides the key to the hangar, so I can borrow some fuel if I ever need to. Really friendly guy smile

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Nice!

I think that's a PA-11, not a SuperCub. A PA-11 is a model between the J3 Cub and the PA-18 SuperCub. Am I right, semmern?

I just bought a Cub. They are going pretty cheap right now due to the economy (you can pick one up for about the price of a new pickup truck). Here's a pic of a landing on a one-lane Texas farm road. We had to pick up my instructor's jacket after it blew out of the baggage compartment. Luckily no one saw us!

Fantastic! That's just the sort of flying the Cub is made for biggrin Is yours a J3? What engine is in it? smile

Technically speaking, the Norwegian Army Cubs were designated PA19s. They're basically PA18Cs. A Super Cub, but with no flaps, sort of. The PA18 was the fist Cub to have the fuel tank in the wing. So it's sort of a basic Super Cub. No flaps, and only one fuel tank, but a 90hp engine.

I figure that if uninvited pilots landing on his airfield really did pi$$ him off big time that he would have some SA-19's and Shilkas around that area. biggrin

Ah yes, we have an early PA18 like yours here that a lady no longer flies and has been sitting for 4 years now in the hangar. I'm trying to buy it for her but I think she won't sell because she wants to keep it for her grandkids. It's a military variant and I believe it came from NOrway, as well.

The engine on my J3 Cub is a 65hp version.

Obviously he did, there must have been a 5 mph headwind, allowing the plane to appear to be at speed, while it in reality is standing still trying to keep from getting blown backwards biggrin

We spotted his jacket in the crop field from the air, but we could not spot it once we landed on the ground. So, I had my buddy take off and get an aerial view of the field and point me to where his jacket was. As he was taking off, I snapped a pic. Luckily he came back for me...but maybe it's becuase his jacket had his wallet also:)
