For years the RIAA has defended the use of DRM, much to the dislike of millions of honest customers who actually paid for their music. Now, in a shocking turnaround, the outfit seems to have come to the realization that DRM does more harm than good and has officially declared its death.

Good riddance! While they are at it they should declare their own demise too and save us all the trouble.

Yet if you go to RIAA's website there is no mention of this (that i could find after searching anyway)

Jonathan Lamy, chief spokesperson for the RIAA declared DRM dead, when he was asked about the RIAA’s view on DRM for an upcoming SCMagazine article. “DRM is dead, isn’t it?” Lamy said, referring to the DRM-less iTunes store and other online outfits that now offer music without restrictions.

Maybe he said it as a personal comment not as an official statement. If so he could be on his way to be fired.

Good. Hope all game developers/publishers see this and it makes them think twice about DRM because the same issues with DRM apply to them too.

iTunes seems to do well without it. Apple is very heavy-handed on the hardware side, though.

Yes, I've bought a few albums from iTunes just recently and I never would have if they didn't remove the DRM and also increase the bit rate. They used to only use 128kb/s. What a rip off.

It's about time.

After being ROYALLY SCREWED by DRM a few times I waded into "pirate waters".

That is, pirating things I PAID FOR.

I figure I've got the disc, any net-cop wants to question ME, here's THAT you mofo...

Literally, I had to get into piracy over DRM.

I guess in the big picture that was educational, but EFF, I shouldn't have had to ever get into Bittorrent...
