Hi guys,

New smoke effects pack. I've tried to create some more distinctive smoke/fire plumes depending on the type of damage.

General airframe - broken plane \:\) No flame, light grey smoke:

Airframe fire - Some flames, black smoke:

Engine fire - small flames, brown/black smoke:

Fuel fire - intense flames, thick black smoke. If you're in close when this lights off you'll know about it. \:\)

Available here and up on CombatAce soon

Have fun.

Very nice!
Isn't there a way to make those smoketrails look more streaming,it's more a chain of plumes ever since SFP1,isn't there a way of changing that,just compare it with say IL-2 for instance,the trails are more like a steady stream which looks more realistic to me,nevertheless great work!

Very nice indeed! All this reminds me of the early patchwork on Red Baron.

Perhaps eventually we'll get an additional 90 planes and wider scope of time and campaigns. Meanwhile this if the sort of thing which really improves my feelings about this game.

Thanks very much.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have had to make some changes to the files. A screw-up on my part was preventing more than one effect type from being used at any one time.

The link above and at CombatAce will give you the latest version, the readme should say Version 2A in the top line.

I have also tweaked the engine fire effect. No flame and a darker grey smoke.

The engine fire and fuel fires can be rare depending on aircraft type. I suggest setting up a 12 SPAD v 6 Gotha mission and watching the fireworks.

Gotha goes down with fuel fires in both engines and airframe alight.

SPAD's getting chopped up by Gotha gunners. At least two fuel fires, several airframe fires and some general aircraft damage in-shot.

I liked all except the airframe damage smoke - too dense and wide. There any way to let it thicker and more translucid?

If you want to have a go adjusting the effects, play around with the following lines for each emitter:

[EmitterType001]
Name=AircraftSmokeEmitter
EmissionType=POINT_EMITTER
UpdateType=NON_MOVING
MaxVisibleDistance=10000.000000
EmissionRate=0.02000 <=============== higher numbers = less
EmissionVolume=0.100000,0.100000,0.100000
ParticleUpdateType=RANDOM_MOVING
ParticleRenderType=ANIMATED_SPRITE
ParticleNumAnimationFrame=4
ParticleAnimationScale=0.5
ParticleRandomOrientation=TRUE
ParticleLifeTime=10.000000
ParticleLifeTimeDeviation=0.700000
ParticleWeight=-3.00000
ParticleRandomness=0.100000
ParticleWindFactor=1.0
ParticleColorTableType=TABLE
ParticleColor[01].Time=0.000000
ParticleColor[01].Value=0.800000,0.800000,0.800000,0.000000
ParticleColor[02].Time=0.010000
ParticleColor[02].Value=0.800000,0.800000,0.800000,0.250000
ParticleColor[03].Time=0.800000
ParticleColor[03].Value=0.800000,0.800000,0.800000,0.250000
ParticleColor[04].Time=1.000000
ParticleColor[04].Value=1.000000,1.000000,1.000000,0.000000
ParticleSizeTableType=TABLE
ParticleSize[01].Time=0.000000
ParticleSize[01].Value=1.100000
ParticleSize[02].Time=0.4000000
ParticleSize[02].Value=4.000000
ParticleSize[03].Time=1.0000000
ParticleSize[03].Value=9.000000
These control the 'width' of the plume at specific times. I've been assuming its in seconds and metres
BaseSizeDeviation=0.4
TextureMaterial=AnimatedSmokeMaterial

Erm... it's a bit off-topic but can anyone tell me how to attach a custom smoke effect to firing a particular gun or some weapon on a plane?

I need it for my SPAD 12 mod - there are records of cockpit being filled with thick smoke after firing the cannon.
I've just got upper wing tank fire a couple of times and the flames filled the cockpit obstructing the view. So I guess what I'm looking for is timed smoke trail emitter(s) somewhere in front of the gunsight and in the cockpit itself, linked to firing the gun. Is it possible?
