I preordered two copies of Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade at $49.99 each. That's a fair price, I think. However, the normal retail price is too high -- a monopoly will do that.
I see Apple has a much better deal on their newest OS. If I read correctly, one can buy Apple OS outright for $30 and get a 5 license family pack for $50. Microsoft charges incredibly too much by that measure.

I'm going to get a copy for 50 bucks too. That's a fair price for a upgrade and it can be used to do a clean install from XP. You sure you can upgrade from XP to Win7? Thought I read a while back that Win7 upgrade would only work if upgrading from Vista.

Just remember to obtain the much talked about "Windows XP Mode", you will have to order the Professional or Ultimate Editions for that feature. I just found that out myself. I thought I was only going to have to pay $50, and now I am going to have to shell out $100 (for the Professional Edition). You can create your own XP virtual mode now for free with sandbox software and a copy of XP. Directx doesn't work in that mode though.

I vaguely remember the "XP Mode" is primarily for business applications.
It may have some value if one has an expensive application that does not run in Vista or Windows 7. I had a couple of those when I switched to Vista from XP. However, my games worked in Vista and, so far, the one's I've tried (including an old one from year 2000) work in Windows 7.
One can "try out" XP Mode in Windows 7 RC for free, I have read.

Wow, Microsoft does have a heart after all. Thanks for the link. Yea, as long as you didnt buy Vista Ultimate. MS is not offering ANY kind of deal on those who bought their 'flag ship' OS. After looking at what W7 offers in its different types, I think I am going to downgrade my Ultimate down to W7 Premium. I will just take the lost as a learning lesson unless Gates decides not to screw over his best customers.

OK, thanks fro the info. I only ever do a clean install anyway. Anything else is just asking for trouble. Home Premium Win7 is like Home Premium Vista and not like basic so, yes, that is all 90% of people will need. There are charts out at Microsoft that show you the differences. I don't even see a basic version listed and if there is one it will be for poor countries only probably.
