When my family went to the Cape when I was eight y/o or so, my father picked some up out of curiosity; I think his main idea was camping, hunting and fishing applications where space is a minimum for the niceties. It's been years, but from what I remember, it was like eating a sponge that had hardened. There was some flavor, but not much--pretty much just an after-taste that lingered at the back of your tongue.

We didn't rehydrate it though, so that might make a big difference.

The best that you can say about it is that it has practically no weight and it can easily be carried in a backpack when hiking. In addition to being a common dehydrated food item in sporting goods stores, I've also seen it sold as a novelty item at aviation museums. Kids love the fantasy of astronaut ice cream but I don't think anybody would rate it as a favorite treat.

What does it taste like? Dried, crunchy ice cream. It 'melts' in your mouth but it doesn't turn cold or anything. Big chunks of dry, stale cake frosting could be a close substitute.

Well, I have not had it in at least fifteen years, so my tastes might have change since then. But I always loved it when I had it. It is very expensive, however. I would describe it as being somewhere between ice cream and those little dried marshmallows that are in some breakfast cereals.

i LOVE those marshmallow cereal mixes ! the marshmallow bits are colorful and tasty and go well with milk and the cereal bits. maybe if you crumble the astornaut ice cream in milk and have it with cornflakes or cheerios?

I tried it once when I was at the Air & Space museum in Washington DC. I ate it all but it really wasn't that great.

We got a free sample on the tour I took of the Kennedy Space Center last year. Dried sponge with a little chocolate flavor is the best I can say for it. I took one bite and threw the rest away.
