I think they are part of add-on scenery's put in by the 3D artist.

No, I'm pretty sure they're in the default FSX. I remember flying around low when I first bought the sim. Don't think I even had any add-ons yet, and a big hawk went by me. It was one of my many, "Boy, this sim is really something," moments.

Get the 'dish of birseed' object and place it on your terrain where you'd like to see the birds appear. Sometimes you get an overabundance of squirrels though.

Activate thermal visualization (not sure how it's called in anglo). Birds indicate thermals then.

Like Mathias said, and make sure it's set to "Natural"...then hunt for thermals.

Also, some 3rd party scenery designers add birds, as an earlier poster mentioned. Check out Bill Womack's Hawaii Dillingham X, where you can hear and see gulls flying about. In reality, gulls are quite rare in Hawaii...I think of them as terns, instead, but then I'm an obsessive birdwatcher.

Birds either indicate thermals or must be placed manually.

As a cool gimmick there's also some "AI bird" packages out there which places swarms of geese (or so) on certain routes around the globe.

What is this "thermal visualization" and "dish of birdseed"? I'd like to see birds in this sim too.

LMAO too!
Actually, the code group that has been working on upgrades for EAW
have made it so you see the birds as soon as you enter the cockpit
in the new 1.28. It is now an eaw.ini entry called birdseed.

I honestly wish somebody would add pterodactyls as flying objects.

Or should I say gliding.

We don't want these things flying around 'cause they will shoot you down. My theory is that they are ancient aircraft Also my theory is flawless in that only an advanced early civilization could spell "Pterodactyl".

I was serious :P

An addon that would add dinosaurs (both flying and land-dwelling) to FSX. Could be a decent product.
