Great interview! Wow, did those videos bring back some great memories! Stationed at MCAS El Toro, I used to volunteer on Family Day just to get a better view. Not to mention their practice week, I'd watch from our Jet Engine Test Cell, virtually at the end of the runway. Thanks 20mm and Rhino!

beercheers

Thanks Ken. It was great talking with Rhino. I can't even believe the dedication and the skill it takes to make this work.

Talk about team, this is team.

Be sure and watch the VFAT streaming video guys.

Enjoyed reading the interview! Although I wish there were more details on the configuration the VBA use for their multiplayer sessions in Lock-On.

That was the first thing that popped into my mind when watching their videos. How are they able to fly such tight, precise formations over an Internet connection, without suffering occasional warping or lag? Are they running a dedicated server? Do they run over a public internet connection, or is it a private pipe? What configuration tweaks in Lock-On have they made to improve their multiplayer experience?

I have quite a bit of experience with online multiplayer in Lock-On, flying with 6 fellow squadmates, and we've seen our share of lag spikes and warpage, and we even run a dedicated server!

Just Very curious.

We at one time did have a dedicated server, but now just fly off of my physical computer as the host. Its really 6 one way, half a dozen the other. If you took two guys who with a dedicated server, each had a 40 ping, all in all thats really an 80 ping between the two pilots. As I host now, if that number is less than 80, then thats less lag and one less pipeline that you have to go through.

As far as "tweaks" go, we haven't made a single one. The one thing to realize is that if your computer struggles running "Lock:On" you will get lag spikes from the person who's computer doesn't handle it very well, and all people connected will also get lag. We've also found that the more complex the mission, (i.e. vehicles moving, other ai aircraft, etc.) the connection gets worse. So the moral of the story is, run as little as necessary for your mission if trying to fly formation.
