Redmond (WA) Microsoft has stepped up its effort to promote its Vista operating system, but Windows XP just isnt going away. The company reportedly extended the OEM downgrade timeline once again: As of now, system builders can still offer Windows XP downgrades to their customers and will be able to do so until Vistas second birthday.

Microsofts deadline for allowing OEMs to sell PCs with systems that are downgraded from Windows Vista to XP is still a moving target. Initially planned to expire on June 30 of this year, Microsoft at first granted an extension to July 31. However, OEMs are still selling the downgrade option (often for a premium) and, according to new reports, the deadline apparently has been officially extended for six more months to January 31, 2009. The information is based on one leaked email sent to an OEM.

Wanna bet MS will still be selling XP when Windows 7 comes out?

If they have any sense (which is doubtful), then the answer is yes, they will keep selling XP as long as folks want to buy it.

Microsoft has become so vast and powerful, godlike, that they can afford to force customers to buy products that they do not want instead of products that they do want.

I reason the same as you PanzerMeyer but would like to change the last word to "DX 11" since that version looks like it will add something substantional (like HW tessellation, multithreaded rendering, compute shaders), however time will tell!

I just want my computer to work without hazzle, and have set my present XP system up pretty well. It wil be so much work to port everything to some new system, so I keep postponing it and don't feel bad about that at all, why should I?

For a while anyway. I believe patching support is scheduled to last until 2014.

By the way, Windows 7 is Vista 1.2.

Was able to configure a Dell Inspiron 1520 Windows XP pro this last spring. A week after buying it
I looked on their site found they were no longer offering XP as a base OS. You had to get Vista and
then downgrade back to XP pro. Was sure glad I was able to avoid that hassle.

Have 2 Dells with XP pro and 2 with Vista, easy to guess which ones are the most popular around here.

No way Microsoft is going to limit itself to one revenue stream for Operating Systems when it can have two.

For all the talk of "they must feel silly," the truth is that they're laughing really hard.

I'm using Vista now (changed from XP), and to be honest I haven't seen much of a difference.

I guess all your games have been running fine under Vista? And since you haven't seen much of a difference, do you regret upgrading?
