Detroit - in the Danger Zone!
It's that time of year again, folks...

What war story would you like to see made into a decent film, either using the latest in CGI, existing "stuff" or what have you? What battles and campaigns should be adapted to the screen that haven't yet been, or could be done better or differently?

As for myself, I'd love to see films about the following:

The RAF vs. the Luftwaffe over Britain and France during 1942. Spitfires and Hurricanes attempt to cope with the increasing presence -- and effectiveness -- of the Fw 190 along with the latest in Messerschmitt designs.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf. Taffy 3's desperate attempt to hold off the Japanese Center Force after Halsey mistakenly abandons the landings there to chase the decoy force.

Operation Husky. The disastrous attempt by the Allies to drop paratroopers onto the island in the night before the invasion and the 82nd AB's desperate attempt to hold their positions while the Allies land troops. General James Gavin's finest hour, so to speak.

Defence of the Reich. Told from the German point of view, this story would follow the achievements and attrition of the Sturmstaffelen, those heavily-armored Fw 190s that attempted their best against the hundreds upon hundreds of American heavies. Possibly to include some Wilde Sau (night fighter) action or some die-hard Nazi pilots actually following the "Rammjaeger" order.

Seriously, with the advancement of CGI, it's practically a crime that there are no good WWII flying movies being made. Particularly when you consider that it would be possible to generate near-precise replicas of historical aircraft in historical markings.

Tough question...although i'd like to see a Desert Storm movie it's probably to early so i'd have to say the Korean war then.

(^^I mean an actual war film not other such as Courage under Fire^^)

The Dust,Pandora
Defence of the Reich told from the point of view of one of these very young German pilots.

The story of the Normandie-Niemen and how it got to be.

The battle of Trafalgar. After seeing Master and Commander twice this week, I'm left with a need to see a huge fleet of first rate 100 guns ships battling it out. Even with CGI such a film would be very costly to produce, so I'm not holding my breath, but seriously, how awesome would that be if done correctly ?

A WWI aviation flick that doesn't suck.

A film about William The Conqueror, with a huge battle of Hastings. Now, Hollywood must stay out of this. We all know what crappy romanticised awfully inaccurate depiction of the Middle Ages they usually make. Medieval films are rare, so I would not forgive them for ruining an early 11th century battlescene with plate armor and double-handed swords (which you know they're going to do...)

An American War of Independance film that hasn't got 'America Frak Yeah !' watermarked across it and doesn't star what's his face Gibson.

Cheers

Nico

North Africa air battles in WWII.

151 Wing in Murmansk. Or heck, about the air battles of Safanov and the 2nd Guards!

And, just so they can have a "love angle" in an entirely different film and safely away from the other two, Invasion of Planet Babe by the Hottie Moon.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

Well, next year is the 2000 year anniversary of the battle of the Teutoburger forest.
Germanic tribes ambushed and annihilated the XVII, XVIII and XIX legion, six cohorts of auxiliaries and three cavalry squadrons. Basically stopping the Roman expansion to the north (which is why we still speak germanic languages north of the Rhein).

They should have enough props left from Gladiator to do this cheaply. \:\)

What I'd love to see on film,

1. The campaigns of Friedrich der Grosse (Frederick the Great). I'd love to see some of the major battles he fought against Austria-Hungary and Russia. I'd like the film to center on the Prussian perspective and for it to give a broad overview of who Frederick was. What made him tick so to speak.

2. Like VonBarb said, I would love to see a serious, scholarly and unbiased war movie that covers the major campaigns and/or battles of the American Revolutionary War. I stayed away from that Mel Gibson crap movie.

3. And also like VonBarb mentioned, I would love to see more Age of Sail movies. "Master & Commander" is a brilliant film but unfortunately did not do very well at the box office so I doubt we'll see more of that from Hollywood. :-(

4. The Franco-Prussian war of 1870. About the only time I EVER saw this even covered or mentioned was in the tv mini-series "Wagner".

5. Naval battle of Jutland. The movie will cover some of the developments which led up to the battle as well.

Oh, Korea, Vietnam, Dominican, Iran hostage crisis, Panama, Grenada, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq (1 and 2), Afghanistan 2001-2008...you know, basically anything where America gets its ass handed to it by a technologically weaker &/or numerically inferior force.

In other words, just about any conflict since WWII.

;\)

PS Obama is your last hope, at least he might keep you out of wars with third world countries that you can't win...

X2

Trafalgar would be my #1 choice. People need to re learn who Nelson was!

Second choice would be the RAF night bombing campaign.

Third, a decent movie about the 8th Air Force. Has anyone seen the original memphis Belle? Excellent stuff.

I'd like to see a film based on the memoirs of Vladimir 'Popski' Peniakoff - a lot smaller in scale than some of the moments in WWII history mentioned above, and probably a little more of a niche interest. There is an awful lot of scope for some spectacular, dramatic & moving film content with his book 'Popskis Private Army'.

For those who have no idea who Popski is I'm pretty sure you can find a copy of his book on Amazon, but to whet your appetites I'll try to provide a brief synopsis:

The book traces Vladimir Peniakoff's, a Russian born Belgian Anglophile, career from joining the British Army in the deserts of North Africa to his eventual command of an irregular unit styled on the Long Range Desert Group, where it becomes a highly effective raiding and intelligence gathering unit. From here Popski moves onto the invasion and eventual liberation of Italy, with the P.P.A (Popskis Private Army - actual unit name!) at the forefront of allied invasion, at times liberating Italian towns single handedly.

His description of his actions, feelings and events is highly readable and enjoyable & I urge you to try him out! Two thumbs up - read it at least 4 times.

Actually if you'd leave SimHQ that would be even better.

@ Suicidial - I would love to see a Red Storm Rising movie. Get the right people involved and it could be right up there in quality with Hunt for Red October.
