It's the one that 'Herky' Green got six victories in, in one day.
The plane belonged to Captain Bunn Hearn, but because Herky's N0.11 was out of action he borrowed Hearn's P-47.

I can find reference to the plane, and have the artwork but I don't have the fuselage number, but really need this info. if anyone has it?

By fuselage number, I mean like "Big Stud" of the 325th had the fuselage number 88 painted on the side pictured here:

Can anyone help me with the fuselage number that was painted on the side of "The Star of Altoona" please?

I have managed to source the original artwork, just the number on the side is missing.
Thanks, MP.

We know it will be between 10-39 as these were the numbers used on 317th FS planes. I'll check some references and see if I can narrow it down for you.

Was Hearns plane a 317th? Did it have a unique name?

Capt.Glanville flew #21 and lt. Senefteir flew #16 so eliminate those two. Only 27 more numbers to eliminate! \:\)

Cheers, MP.

The book I have said "The Star of Altoona" had group number 11 but didn't say if that was the number on it's side. The only photo I have of "The Star of Altoona" doesn't show the number because of the angle.

I guess I need clearification. Are you looking for info on Hearn's plane or Green's?

I guess that's were the confusion is because Warren Bodies book "Thunderbolt" states that Greens plane was "The Star of Altoona" and number "11".

1.JaVA_nijssie, do you have a report like that for January?

Greens NORMAL ride was number "11".
The day he made those kills he was flying "Star of Altoona" which was Hearns' normal ride ;\)

That's correct, I'm after the number on Hearn's plane as it was the one that Green had to use as Green's No.11 was being serviced.

So it's the number on the side if "The Star of Altoona" which belonged to Hearn that I'm after, just to clear that up ;\)

Thanks, MP.

Oh, I should have mentioned the mission was flown on January 30th 1944.

So we are looking for Hearn's plane, and the number on the side of it.

The only reference to Green is that he used Hearn's plane because Green's No.11 was not in action that day.

So, once more...the number on the fuselage of Hearn's plane which was called "The Star of Altoona"

Cheers, MP.

So the 'Star of Altoona' wasn't with the number 11 - just wanted to speak out a clearly conclusion.
