Hello all!

I'm afraid the forum has been down now for almost 2 weeks. I have contacted SCROFT, though comms are slow.

Thanks for the update, ArgonV. Hopefully SCROFT can work his magic once more. Fully understand if he's got his hands full with other stuff ATM, in these interesting times.

Nice to see you found us, Blind Faith. Argon and I were getting tired of sitting here looking at each other. Tell us a joke, to cheer us up.

Hey guys, I'm still around also, I don't check the old forums often, but I tried to visit yesterday and saw they were completely gone! It then took an act of congress for me to remember my password here. Anyway, hoping SCROFT can be found, if not...well, what a hell of a run we had.

Also, good to see you Blind Faith, ArgonV and blue six!

Good seein ya mate! I sent an email out to SCROFT the other week - still no reply. frown

In other news, I upgraded my system to a Win 10 x64 Pro machine and copied my SDOE installs over. They still work!

Nice to see I am not alone.

I have been running off Windows 10 pro 64 for at least 5 years with patch 1.6.0.7 in Opengl.without too many signs of incompatibility..
The older Windows 10 gets the more backward compatile it gets.

Ah good to know! I have not installed FS-WWI or SDOE from scratch in Win 10. Is that still possible?

I did try it a few years back. I don't remember how succesful I was. Since no registry entries are required to run the game succesfully I generally just dump everything from the CD to the HD. either from a backup or even the original CD.

I suspect that running the setup.exe in win98 compatibility mode might do the trick.

I have also played arround with Nglide to see how good the graphics were originaly. Interesting results. so far.

For Argon and Blind Faith. After several years of dithering ("if it ain't broke, don't fix it") I'm about to attempt the W10 upgrade on my W7 sim rig. Any words of wisdom for me?

Howdy!

I opted for a fresh install of Windows 10. I have all of my games and files off the OS drive - and installed Win10 to a new M.2 SSD OS drive.

One big gotcha was that a lot of games and programs store prefs and save info into various places in your Users folder. I hooked my old OS drive back up and copied things out as I found I needed them. I also copied out my Start Menu shortcuts from my old OS drive - as I had many for games I wasn’t going to reinstall - but rather move over.

My SDOE installs fired right back up!

@blue six

Argon V's approach is the best. In my case I have gone nuts on cheap space. I have separate drives with my games on them (5TB). When I do any rebuilding I format only the sytem drive and install fresh to it. Before I do so I get a detailled and verified backup of C.

After reinstall I rename folders on trhe game drives with the extension .old I do the reinstall if needed to register the program in the system to the same folder name as before. relocate all the files from the old C (this is the tedious and variable process) then rename the new folder to .ins and remove the .old extension from the original folder. When everything goes well the newly installed game has all the mods and tweaks. You can now remove the .ins folder it served its purpose.. I did a full rebuild before Christmas and it took me 3 weeks to get all my games back to my prefered state.

Have fun!!!

Cheers guys, I took your advice and have gone for a clean install of W10 and have upgraded from HDD to SSD. Afraid I'm not quite as tech-savvy as you two, so am struggling along reinstalling the various programmes and utilities needed to get me back where I was with W7. Not exactly fun, but a good opportunity to do some spring cleaning and eliminate stuff I've not been using. Have to say I'm very impressed with the SSD, feel like it's given my old rig a new lease on life. No sims installed yet, but am looking forward to seeing how they run with the new drive. Don't expect it will improve my flying, but perhaps I'll see a higher FR as I plummet in flames toward the ground.

Best wishes and stay healthy,

blue six

@blue six, do you still have your SDOE installs on the other, older disk? If so, copy them over to your new Win 10 build. Edit the sdemon.ini files for them, to be sure the path is correct, and they should fire right up!

Hi Argon, thanks for the suggestion. Much as I hate to admit it, SDOE was not on the W7 HD. I still have it on my ancient XP box, and fire that up from time to time just to remind me of good times (and to appreciate just how far flight sims have come in the past 15-20 years).
