Thats the US factory conversion of the plane the Soviet had an diffrent approach offen an solution with open cockpits P-40's,Hurricane's exept on the P-39 trainer.

Oi, you wouldn't catch me riding shotgun in that rattletrap of a field mod. Part of me wants to declare BS, but then the Soviets had such oddball tastes that it might actually have been real (though not the colours, certainly).

Yes, to keep a young pilot or even a crew chief learning to taxi from nosing over.

The U.S. did experiment with two seat conversions with the idea of creating a transition aircraft so new pilots did not have to make the jump from a dedicated trainer to a front line fighter without an instructor being on board. These were not put into production, but the concept lived on and was implemented in the jet age.
