A similar named thread was locked. Not sure why. The discussion on Sound attenuation is solely adjusting a setting in the conf.ini in the Sim. It has nothing to do with any unauthorised sound files. Editing your conf.ini is SOP its a game setup option.

Moderators as long as we keep to the authorised game version whats the issue causing the thread to be locked ?

btw does anybody know the max value for that conf-ini line? now its set to 7 and coudnt find anything about it a m4t knowledge base
also wanted to ask if bigger value means bigger bang outside the cockpit? I know its unrealistic but I want the flak sound loud...

thx

cheers

I'm thinking Tom didn't realize that this was only an adjustment to the .ini file being discussed. Until Dart posted about this in the earlier thread, I didn't even know this adjustment existed.

Yep, seven is max - one can hear other planes flying around, ground fire, etc.

Zero is "if you can hear the flak, it's waaaayyyy too close!" which is historical.

I zeroed out my attentuation because, well, I'm a bit jumpy and have been known to break at the sound of anything I hear outside of my cockpit.

I just use the historical bit (which is true) as a cover for my cowardice.

I'm not in front of my IL-2 pc now and I don't recall this value in conf.ini.
Do we have to add it, or it already exists?

So attenuation=0 is 'nothing but engine noise, radio, and enemy shots which actually pass straight through the cockpit'. That's alright then!

attenuation=0 means maximum volume if you can hear me over the roar of the engine. I said-

In the real world I mean

Sounds are attenuated (weakened) with distance or in sound-shadow. Light is attenuated similarly with distance. Both are logarithmic quantities, the inverse-square law. Twice as far away, four times attenuation. Three times as far away, nine times attenuation and so on

What a relief from chat about hackage, thanks for moments of clarity

Yes we are talking about negative attenuation me thinks.

Whilst you are in there dabbling in Conf.ini make sure the number of speakers is correct. I (like a lot) run 5.1 set up. The default speaker setting using "Surround" in game menu gives 4 as the Conf.ini setting. I set mine to 5 and "think" there is a differrance... though it might be the Reverse Coriolis attenuation giving better sound.

I would be interested to hear others opinion on the speaker number setting.

In the Conf.ini of the original IL-2 Sturmovik, attenuation is set to 14.

Good info Homer. I just tried 14 in 4.08 and it is much better. Flak is still audible but you need to be right on it. Other aircraft fighter v fighter you can only here the bad guy when he is super close I estimate 50metres or so.

Regarding speakers it seems the 5 value is overwritten to 4 each time you enter the game.

The lower the better - you shouldn't hear anything outside your aircraft. 7 is default which is too high. I use 3 - some use 0.

Pardon me, but if I understand correct, the lower the number is, the less you can hear enemies approaching you, right?

What I'm looking here, is the "right" number, so you can hear enemies from far away.

Some people have made some excellent setup on sound settings and they get a big advantage this way.

Mine is the default 7 and all I can say is that I never hear them coming.

Dolph don't be a "Sonar Sound slag" \:\) set it to 14 knowing you are a realism pilot \:\)

I have tried everything from 0 to 14. To me it seems the higher the number the greater the attenuation.... and that makes sense in a literal way. That is a bigger number the less of the "outside" world you hear. It also seems to me that from 0-7 its all the same. From 7-14 it becomes more realistic. You can still hear other aeroplanes but not until they are really close ... like <100metres. To me this reflects the real world pretty well. For those that exclusively fly Cockpits on imo you should be flying with higher attenuation settings as that is more realistic. For those that fly cockpits off well whatever you like.

What would be really nice was for this to be server side, so what the host selects is what everybody gets. This would then allow others to set what works for them.

It's strange how people can have different perception, to me changing those settings in 4.08 does nothing, or if it does i hear slightly further and better with a high number.

Dolph, if you want your sonar back buy a AC97 chipset, i lost my sonar when changing for an audigy (and got a much better sound at the same time). I agree it's upsetting when you can't sneak out of sight because you're heard. I've asked Oleg a hundred times to change this since 2001, to no avail...
