...here is a link to the review that got me started w/ RBII/3D - and flight simming in general. I came accross the site and it's still there!!!

The review is from 1997 and the test system was a "Dell Pentium II 266 MHz with a 4 MB Matrox Millenium video card." (Such power! )

Here is a taste:

Sierra/Dynamix has been working on Red Baron for over two years. Unfortunately they were unable to make the 3D accelerator transition in time for the shipping version of Red Baron 2. In a time that most new games offer this feature Red Baron's graphics do look very dated. Currently Red Baron runs at either 320x200 or 640x480 mode with 256 colors from a custom pallet.

There is a firm commitment from Dynamix to offer 3D support in a future patch within the next two months or so. There will be at least generic Direct 3D support, and hopefully support for specific cards like the 3Dfx.

Reaction to RB's graphics have ranged from pleasant surprise to virulent disapproval. There is no doubt that Red Baron provides an excellent sense of where you are in relation to the ground and other objects. There is a full featured rolling terrain engine at work, and you can fly under bridges and buzz an incredible array of buildings and other terrain features. It can be difficult to pick out planes even at fairly close range because of the speckled pixel look of the terrain, and other objects which detracts from the over all feel of the game.

Oh...and here is shot of that "interesting" fall terrain:

It is truly amazing how far we've come - and yet we still fire up RBII/3D for the solid kicks it provides.

Yes, Cage's World is a wonderful time-capsule of early RB.

"There is no doubt that Red Baron provides an excellent sense of where you are in relation to the ground and other objects."

This was true from the beginning, as crude as the early non-Glide terrain might seem. The sense of space, the ease of orientation was outstanding, compared, for example, IMO, to Rowan's Flying Corps. I played RB initially with an OEM 4 mb graphics card. 3dfx cards were very expensive in those days, and of course "Glide wrappers" were unheard of. Later, when Glide went out of fashion, I acquired a Voodoo 2 cheaply and was able to enjoy the 3D effects.

Yep, remember those days well, and as mentioned it`s always nice to be able to see where all these RB roots started. Cages World is a great site.
