This patch offers big performance and speed increases across the board, and people with both multi-core as well as single core processors as well as ATI and nVidia video cards should now be getting much better framerates. In addition to these highly anticipated technical improvements we have also included substantial AI improvements in key areas like pathfinding, spotting, line of sight/line of fire, soldier responsiveness and behavior. Other tweaks and fixes have been applied to various game elements and players will also notice some improved terrain textures and better visual representation of elevations and distant objects.

We are offering the patch in two distinct flavors as well. A 136 Megabyte ALL-INCLUSIVE patch that will work on ANY previous Battlefront.com version of the game (from v1.01 to v1.03) and a 45 Megabyte INCREMENTAL patch that is meant to upgrade an already patched v1.03 copy of the game to the new v1.04 level.

The v1.04 patches for the Paradox Interactive CD version and the Gamersgate download version were unfortunately delayed but will be released later this week. We also plan to have a Combat Mission: Shock Force v1.04 Updated Demo coming out in the next few days.

--- v1.04 PATCH NOTES ---

PREVIOUS SAVE GAME COMPATIBILITY NOTE:
Save games created with earlier versions of the game are NOT compatible with v1.04. Please finish your in-progress games before applying this patch.

--v1.04 Patch Features--

* CM:SF is multi-processor/multi-core friendly. Workarounds like
"setting affinity" to single-processor are no longer needed.

* Improved frame rate, especially on large maps.

* Improved vehicle pathfinding.

* Various "stuck units" problems fixed.

* Corrected a problem with shots coming through ridgelines.

* Soldiers are much quicker to take up fighting stances and/or open
fire when reaching a movement destination.

* When ordered to stop moving, soldiers halt immediately rather than
look for best positions. This helps them avoid unnecessary casualties.

* Vehicles correctly respond to non-Movement Commands assigned to
Waypoints.

* Area fire versus buildings properly spreads fire versus all
locations on the indicated level.

* Soldiers are more likely to move through breaches blasted in
building walls rather than close by doorways.

* The TacAI is generally more likely to open fire, especially with
heavy grenade launchers. Previously the TacAI tried too hard to
conserve ammunition.

* Troops do a better job facing in the direction implied by the end
of a movement path.

* Troops cannot disembark through walls.

* "Target Light" works properly for infantry.

* Corrected a problem where a vehicle would button up due to incoming
small arms fire, but then become overly reluctant to fire its own
weapons.

* Corrected a problem where troops would not exit a vehicle because
some other troops onboard were considered blocking exits even though
they were not.

* When units are pinned (i.e. they can shoot but will not respond to
movement orders) it is shown in the suppression meter display.

* Corrected some problems where teams within a squad were not
properly coordinated for movement.

* Smoke grenades don't damage vehicles.

* Grenades are used properly (fixed a bug that made the range used
too short).

* Antitank weapons like Javelins are less likely to be used during
area fire (except versus buildings).

* Improved ground textures.

* Distant terrain looks smoother and less "blocky".

* Trenches and roads show up better at longer distances.

* Map elevations are displayed more accurately when viewed from long
distances.

* Brush terrain is drawn out to greater distance.

* Computer player won't hold armored vehicles back so far in the rear.

* Antitank specialist is more likely to be the man who picks up an
antitank weapon (say, when unloading a Javelin from a Stryker).

* Moving vehicles have reduced spotting capability.

* Blown-out building walls don't cause lots of ricochets as if the
wall was still there.

* Fixed a bug that caused problems with splitting squads multiple
times in turn-based games.

* Fixed a bug that sometimes caused a crash during game-save.

* Corrected a problem where multi-unit selecting a shaken/panicked
unit would cause the multi-unit select to be canceled.

* Stryker smoke is now the correct color (white).

* "Game Paused" message is smaller and less obtrusive.

This is the patch we've been waiting for. This is how it should have been released. I am now seeing the CM in CMSF that I came to expect from the makers of CM1. Still needs a little polishing. I would say it is at a state equivalent to CMBO shortly after release. I really think they have two or three patches worth of fixes in 1.04. Now BFC can focus on actually enhancing the game instead of fighting off us barbarians

Can't say much one way or the other about the gameplay as I'm not interested in the modern setting, but the latest patch made a *huge* positive difference in FPS and general smoothness for me.

Have fun

They still seem to have forgotten to add the multiplayer wego over TCP/IP. I somehow believed that everyone played combat mission that way. Imagine my surprise when after months of rain checks we finally got to setup a lan game and discovered that there was no WEGO over TCP/IP... nooooooooo.

Well I'm happy to report an average of 30 to 35 fps with everything on high now, was 7 fps average.
This is do-able, and playable... now to get back into it to check if they fixed the other complaints/issues...

(This patch is going to ruin my review, already submitted for formatting, lol.)

OH, and Battlefront... next time ask our permission to be your beta testers. ;\)

You know Magnum, I was a Beta Tester for CMSF and I didn't experience any of the problems that some of you had. While I freely admit we didn't (and couldn't) catch as many bugs as 10,000 Maniacs, but its not like we didn't test it and test it hard.

Not to mention the data mining I did for BF to build Air Support loads and such we actually did look at stability and FPS. My AMD 64 1.8GHz Laptop was able to run the smal to medium scenarios just fine....the larger ones did overwhelm my smallish system but that was to be expected.

Just like the problems F4 had in the beginning when everyone that had overclocked their Pentiums or 486/66 was crashing the system and everyone who hadn't was fine. Sometimes its the person's PC and not the game.

Of course, I could just be knee deep in the Koolaid but I really do feel like some of the complaints were just the vocal minority piling on.

Well, no disrespect, but I don't over clock or do any of that, I have a pretty kick ass system that can run almost every game including Lock On, Armed Assault, GRAW2, World in Conflict, and many more...rarely dipping below 40 frames per second, and usually in the 60's to 70's...

CMSF is the first and only game that ran under 10 frames per second... so no matter what others say, I know how this game performed on my very common and good system.

and BTW... I got ahold of the press release version before release, and informed Battlefront of my problems, telling them IMO that the game was not ready to be released, they did anyway... we got a beta, no buts about that.

Hey, Steve has admitted severeal times it was premature. Some people bought brand new systems just to play CMSF. I have to ask if you have even read the tech support forum at BFC. These guys aren't high end hackers. I'd suggest taking a step back and read the reviews and comments around the web.

btw, 1.04 is a massive improvement in gameplay as well as performance.

My machine is a tad better than Magnum's and I had the same exact issues that he did. I will try this patch and see if it improves play. Thanks for sharing.

lol, no we didn't try any and all of the recommended fixes...we just sat around and complained... is that what you want to hear or think. lol

Of course we did, not just me, about 5 members of the SimHQ staff all with the same problems... I'm not trying to ditch Battlefront or you, but I'd say I have a pretty good pulse on what readers of SimHQ, especially the land and armor stuff, deal with and think... and we got a beta upon release.

My review comes out Monday, and unfortunately it is not a happy one, (more then just the frame rate issues), I kinda wonder if it should be published now, since first impressions of the new patch have greatly changed my opinion. But that is up to the big man.

But a number of SimHQ staff and dedicated members spent many nights trying to just get a game to connect and play... if you are one of the beta testers, I'd sure like to know what your system is you tested the game on, and if you ever connected ONCE to a multiplayer game... because if there was beta testers for this game, by the post and feedback from members of our community, that don't normally #%&*$# and complain to much about games, problems and reactions...those beta testers failed.

When someone can explain why 5 members with different but good machines of this community have reported that they can not connect at all or run this game with more then 15 FPS, then I will eat my words...till then, I call it like I see it... and thou i ain't no expert or gaming god, I would say I have a pretty good idea how everything works.

I haven't tried 1.04 yet, up to 1.03 it ran very poorly on my system. The game should not have been nearly as demanding on hardware as it turned out to be. If I can run something like Medieval II with thousands of units on the field and much higher quality graphics with everything maxed then CMSF should not have strained my system at all.

I'm looking forward to trying this patch though because I really hope CMSF can be what I'd hoped it would be.

Sorry Magnum, my post was directed at the beta tester. I should have been more specific.

Sigh.

Installed 1.04, the game still isn't playable for me \:\( I just get constant flickering, from the menu to ingame. flickerflicker*seizure*

Running it on Vista 64bit, on an ATI X1950XT PE with the Catalyst 7.9 drivers. Had the same problems in the original demo, was hoping that by patch 1.04 they'd have sorted out things \:\(

Yes, I did read the tech forums once they came out and frankly never did have any of those issues, but that is just me and my computer.

I quite positive there are some legitimate complaints, there is no way a group of beta testers will catch all the possible variation of computers out there. I brought up the overclocking example as many people couldn't play Falcon4 and complained and many of them had made non-standard changes to their system that through Falcon for a loop.

I myself, never tried a multiplayer game, as I had a hard enough time carving out testing time for SP and specific issues, however, I didn't notice any issue but I didn't go looking for them in the test forums either.

I do wish I understood why so many are having issues when I didn't but that is way outside my lane. All I can tell you is that I never saw it and when there were issues, Steve and Charles listend and looked that bug list developed and took action.

You didn't see any of the issues that even Steve admitted they had on release?

Any beta tester worth his salt must actively go on a bug hunt.
Daily business isn't finished unless at least one new bug is found. If you can't find bugs, you're not looking hard enough, or looking in an inefficient way. Our own software is said to be one of the most stable and best performing one on the market and has had a total of ten years to mature. And there still are at least six hundred bugs active and reported in our database, and those are just the ones that we bothered to add to it and which we found. I'm sure that there are at least two or three times more bugs that nobody found because they're intermittent or which require an unusual chain of events to manifest. Beta testers aren't invited to enjoy a sneak preview and to confirm that everything's rosy. Beta testers have a hard and ungrateful job of digging deep and do repetitious, time consuming, and methodical tests, and all that for a free game and a position in the credits where few bother to look anymore if at all. But it's a job that must be done, and it must be done in a way to actually yield some bug reports. If you don't find at least one bug per testing session you're not successful.

IMO, reviews should be of the release version. If it is released a mess, say as much. Then, wait a few months and release a patch for your review.

I would agree with that SSnake, and many was the time I saw the iterations of trying to squash a bug that was identified. What I don't understand were the performance issues, those I had where because of a specific build issue that was corrected.

I was trying to draw attention to the fact of the various computer configurations that permutate the PC landscape. Not only are there the various "offical" hardware and software configuration, there are the multitude of "overclocked" and personalized changes that can't be tested for. The example of the overclocked systems messing up Falcon 4 was a perfect example of that.
