Actually there's plenty of surviving aerial photos from the period, and at least one archive that's more or less intact (off the top of my head I think it's the British one). That said as they're black and white, not in a digital format, and in any case features are very difficult to spot (nothing to do with quality) I doubt they'd be much use for trying to cover a large area. Maps on the other hand are very detailed and you can buy both British and German trench maps in a digital format, and larger scale ones could be used for areas behind the lines.

Have fun

As I said... only on the frontline area...
And he map cover much more than just the front area.
The british archive covers even less... only the Northern part of the front area

I have access to the french archives, and not only are they in B&W, but the quality is also quite bad (the glass plates have been stored in non-optimal places). And sometimes, the glass plates don't even exist any more, what's staying is paper "contact" pictures, quite old, with very low residual contrast and scratches everywhere.

The kind of document may help to model some parts of the front... no more. For the rest, the maps are the only source (but of good quality, largelly enough for a good modelling).

Interesting ... note the wind scoops in the tail surfaces of the balloon used to keep the nose of the ballon pointed "into" the wind. I hadn't noticed these before in other shots. Knowing this gives an approaching pilot the current wind direction and could be a pretty useful in an aerial combat situation.

Are we not getting a little too picky over terrain detail? As long as the cities are in the right spot and there is a frontline I'll be happy. It's not going to bother me in the slightest if the hill or farm house that my burning Camel buries itself into wasn't historically there.

Rabbits, break right and climb.

Are this really ingame shots, not just drawings?

Nope, I went back and looked at my archived screenshots and sure enough, the scoops are there!

A bit of both, sort of game art.

The SE5A artwork looks like it features *game* terrain in the background now:

Aliasing on the wires and wire shadows (if not compression artifacts) may mean that the image is based on an ingame shot

Looks nice down there, thanks for the heads-up FR. Very nice artwork Gennadich!

Yes, they've changed it.

I still think it looks a bit bogus, 3D model or in game shots please GT.

I still think it looks a bit bogus

Guaranteed to PO a developer a word like bogus and seems a mite unkind being as how we don't bite the hand that feeds us now do we. Bogus meaning faked, underhand in some way, fraudulent

Gennadich owes us nothing and will please bring us a new WW1 sim. If we don't attack them for no good reason months before takeoff

I think it looks charming and refreshing and talented.

It sure does look from with-in game (background terrain).
