This game still amazes me.

I just did a Lone Wolf patrol in my Pup about 5 miles over when I spotted 2 DIII's about 2000ft below me and to port. Forgetting my self imposed rule of not taking on 2 - 1 odds I put my plane into a dive aiming to knock one down and then carry on up and away before the other could react. I had approached at speed to about 100 yards thinking I had caught them napping when suddenly they pulled hard round to starboard causing me to overshoot. One then turned back onto me while the other continued his turn to box me in. We scrapped for about 5 minutes with no quarter given. Whenever I thought I had a chance on one the wingman would appear behind me causing me to have to break off. Suffice to say my Pup was soon filled with numerous bullet holes and I had been slightly wounded. I was contemplating landing as there was just nothing I could do against these very experienced opponents when absolutely out of nowhere 8 SPADS led by none other than Georges Guynemer himself came diving down to drive the two V-Strutters off my tail. The enemy musn't have seen them either because they were both seen spinning down within seconds of the attack. I just couldn't believe it.

Wow!...That was cool! It's engagements like this that make Red Baron the classic sim it is.

Salute!

I'm going to make sure I always have FRAPS running just to document these type of encounters \:\)

What a great story! I hope I can get back into SP again some day. Some of those missions are unforgettable.

One time I had 22 enemy scouts chasing me. I took them to my Drome where 20 friendlies were circling the field just waiting for something to do! I was pretty shot up so I just landed and watched the battle. Amazing!

That'll teach 'em

The being chased forever is the only thing I really dislike about the game.

Nice account Smosh.... I too am fasinated by this games.
I've learned to take notes about where my other squadron mates' missions are.
So, that if I'm out numbered and in trouble I'd take off in that direction hoping for help.
It's actually worked a few times.
I've also, when pursued back over the lines, flown over friendly aerodromes and let the
defensive guns distract the E/As enough for me to escape.
I've also done this over friendly balloon positions too...
Great fun!

My very first test flight in RB3D was in one of those mono-wing kites. I remember struggling to stay up, while at the same time trying to admire the 3D landscape which was quite novel to me at the time. Then a speck on the horizon appeared; maybe artifact I thought. But the speck formed into a single enema hell-bent on shooting me down. I didn't expect company. Funny, I don't recall the outcome, just white knuckles. The serendipity, the chance encounter, the surprise is what I've always remembered and for me makes for a great single player experience. Now.. I've gotten all nostalgic and looking for my copy of RB

I hope you bought him a beer to say thanks.

I'm looking for a WW1 flight sim to get properly into and thinks like that are the kind of events that I like to see. Good AI, and randomness in the encounter.

Methink it's time to order a copy.

Cheers

>>Good AI, and randomness in the encounter.>>

At least the latter is a big part of the appeal of this game, as well as the fact air ops are simultaneously occurring along the Front whether or no the player ever gets there to see it.

It is a great game despite it's age and inevitable warts like AI too stupid to bug out when losing oil with the result they eventually burn up. I just delete credit for those "kills"...and any others that are not witnessed.
