I tried to install OFF on a second drive and it ATE the files on that drive. Don't know if it was corrupted or what, but the data on that drive are gone! Watch the install carefully!

err thanks, we have had THOUSANDS of people install and I think I only ever heard of one person losing something.. so pretty normal for software installing on PC's - - likely you had corruption or some other issue already on your system before installing 5GB (count em) of OFF data !

Sorry! Didn't mean to sound alarmist but it DID eat everything on the drive. Luckily most of the stuff had already been backed up. I'm not going to take the chance of this happening again so I'm going to pass on OFF. I'm sure the game is outstanding and everyone should backup the data on the installation drive before attempting installation.

No problem Jeethro, just it will put people off trying a perfectly good mod if you stick "warning" in a forum because of a rare happening - so I have to explain the other side of the coin.

There are no viri or other problems in OFF Jeethro - as I say 1000's of people would have complained otherwise ;\)

I would make sure you ore anyone download OFF using a download manager like we recommend (getright.com for example) on the download page. This would avoid the huge files getting corrupted.

Running any install program can cause problems especially if the drive, your registry, or the install exe itself is corrupted.

With ANY software if you have important data you should have a back up to hand before installing.
Always worth backing up anyway.. famous last words.

Jethro433:

Sounds like you had other problems you were not aware of. Your warning about this mod is unfounded and uninformed.

Yep, lots of things out there that are bad, but not the OFF install or we would be seeing tons of complaints on the OFF forums.. just isn't happening, not one complaint, "Jethro 433" BTW.. also interesting that you only have two posts on this forum, there is no info about you in your profile, and that you just joined SimHQ? Interesting...

And thanks for not apologizing for the unfounded warnings/accusations about the OFF install... gimme a break please, just common sense to not make such statements on public forums!

Dance: I don't object to posts for no reason. As you said, he apologized "in a way".. actually, it was hardly an apology when he went on insisting that it was OFF that ate his hard drive etc. Notice the "it" (OFF) "DID" (capitalized) eat his HD, that he isn't going to take the chance, etc., etc.

This is what he said:

"Sorry! Didn't mean to sound alarmist but it DID eat everything on the drive. Luckily most of the stuff had already been backed up. I'm not going to take the chance of this happening again so I'm going to pass on OFF.
