Shell cases

There are ejected shell cases? I thought the hot shell cases fall to the floor in a big pile smouldering. Where are they ejected I wonder, the machine guns are mounted internally almost. The machine guns sound sophisticated then. Took them so long to find a way to safely eject a hot shell case "Wheeee!" they forgot to sort out the fiendish jamming problem. Oxford graduates my left gonad. I am furious <snort>

Hehehe Ming....you're going overboard with all of it! \:D

Observer MGs often had a collection bag for the casings, especially on the pusher-jobs, where the risk of spent brass overboard threatened collision with the pilot, engine, prop, and the airframe's lattice work behind.

I once read of a desperate pilot firing his MGs accidentally in a dogfight, that caused his tailing opponent to suddenly break off from the attack....the noise of the colliding brass must have made the enemy think he was also under attack!

We're going to need fresh avatars for WW1 FR so I'm getting into character

collection bag for the casings, especially on the pusher-jobs

With the prop behind the plane yes of course. Where are we going to throw the wrappers off our sandwich packs...

"I was at 17000ft and just finishing lunch and there was a loud bang as a corner of a stale Cornish pasty caused the aeroplane to flip over. I almost spilled my Bovril. Action report M. Severly.

[in pencil in another hand] See if you can get this chap a post in the Catering Corps will you Charles? "

I was reading about a report by a unit commander who was snortingly-furious that RFC Top Brass insisted on bombers flying in a combat box FR, in Three Wings today. He goes on a great length listing reasons why this is a stupid idea 'inherently defensive' 'stifled initiative' 'inviting disaster' and the guy reading the report pencils in at the bottom "This really shows this officer wants a rest"

Had to check and the skeptic was one Major Tom. Page 146

Yes, (a),(b),(c),(d),(e)......and in addition larger formations were also easier to spot from the air too (but). ;\)

Btw, No. 11 Squadron RFC/RAF was initially equipped with Vickers F.B.5 Gunbuses, F.E.2bs (both 2-seater pushers), and lastly Bristol Fighters.

Major Hubbard might have grappled with the conflict of whether his primarly mission was to perform as a fighter or reconnaissance unit (but it had to perform both).
