Sorry chaps but I have just had one of those moments and I just had to share it!

I have spent the best part of 3 hours soldering on the 12 wires to the headers for Leo Bodnars BU0836 module - having never soldered before in my life I was getting very, very frustrated with the process - Grrr!

Finally finished them all though (and it doesn't look pretty I can tell you folks) and then fixed one set of the wires onto a switch. I ran upstairs like some demented fool - which if you ask me, all pit builders are ever so slightly mad - myself included!

Plugged it in...

Waited for the USB detection routine...

Opened up the Control panel...

Double clicked on the "Game controllers" icon and there it was...

Double clicked again on the BU0836...

Oooh 32 buttons showing...

Clicked on my little electronic push-to-make switch button...

Joy of joys - the little red light that is Button One lit up!

Ahhhhh!

I know in the grand scheme of things it ain't much - but isn't it a wonderful feeling when something you have made yourself (apart from the BU0836 - thanks Leo) just works?

PS Leo if you read this - firstly thanks for a wonderful bit of kit, at a great price and could you please add another product to your lineup - headers with short wires already soldered on for us non-electrician types?

Cheers

Good show GlynD, I can remember my first go with solder, not very pretty either, but the end result was great, caused me to go on to bigger, and better projects. Cheers Puts

Soldering is easy to learn - just takes a bit of practise \:\) just be thankful that with all that heat you were pumping in there, you didn't melt anything important \:D

I got to get me one of those controllers eh ...

Oh no worries as it was my first attempt at soldering I was no where near the electonic stuff!

Leo very thoughtfully includes some push on headers and yes the controller is a brilliant bit of kit at a super price...

Cheers

Heat travels down the wires ... you can melt the tracks off PCBs if you're not careful \:D
Oh wait you were soldering on the pots? That's not so bad then ;\)

I ruined a couple of pots by getting them too hot when I was soldering the wires to them.

I bought a cheap little clip called a heat sink (from Radioshack) that clips between the pot and the wire thats being soldered and I haven't ruined one since. Source heat sink

That's a flipping good idea, I wonder if Maplin do something like that. I'll have a look later...

Oh yes and the Apache Sim shell is nearly complete, another "Grrr then Ahhh" moment!

For those in the UK new to soldering, Maplin do a "Heat shunt" for £1.69 that does the same thing as the thing Spitfire recommended:
