Hi,
what is in your opinion the best combat heli sim?
I've read many people writing that Longbow II is the Falcon 4 amongst the Heli sims. (I'va played F4 and nothing comes close!!!)

What about Apache vs. Havok or Comanche vs. Hokum? The graphics seems to be better, but what about game play?

I am not looking for an arcade shoot-them-up game à la Comanche. I am looking for a realistic heli sim, graphics comes second on my priority list.

What do you think?

Cheers,
goofi

Hi,

If graphics aren't your priority then i'd recommend HIND. It's probably not considered to be a 'Purists sim', and has been overlooked by the modding community, hence the lack of custom skins and missions etc.

The campaigns and single missions are actually quite immersive, and if you enjoy a challenge, will keep you busy for a while. so plenty of value to be had there.

Worth a look, imho.

Longbow 2.

More realistic than Gunship 2000, and imo also much better than EECH. Problem with EECH is it is far more arcade-like, and the flight model is hypersensitive especially for the comanche. Tweaking some config-files never got rid of that, whenever I tried it.

I abandoned Longbow 2 and all other sims for SBP meanwhile, but that is no helicopter or flightsim, but tanks.

Longbow 2 is properbly the best game of its time. I know its an old game now, but back arround 1995 or what ever it was really the top graphic game with support of vodoo 1, 2 and 3..
You still can play longbow 2 on your new computer today there are many addons that improve the graphic ect. Even tough the grapics are not as good as ARMA i still think that longbow is still a good game in the top 5 of flight sims.

The best and most realistic handling/phsycics of a helicopter is.
Search and rescue series.. the helicopter physics are awesome.. and never found a game that even come close to the feeling of a heli other than search and rescue.

About Enemy engaged 2..
The game got some nice features... well actually number 2 in the series are just number 1 with a few changes to graphic ect.... actually i think its a more arcade flight sim.... the game itself is brand new but there are som many bugs that you cant belive it.....
The graphics in EECH2 is good, but there are so many problems that you give ud playing the game.

FSX helies..
Well fsx is excellent.. I know many people compaint that they are having problems due to the heavy use of cpu and graphics... ect. but actually I run the game on full graphics ect... an impossible acomplishment to most of the forum people, but never the less im doing it.
THe fligh physics of fsx are truly awesome... wow... and if you find the threat in here about fsx and reality a person compare real life video and fsx to each other.. fsx is 95% close to the real thing.. Helies in fsx handle quite well..

Hi delevero,
I couldn't find any add-ons for Longbow 2, do you have a link? It would also be great to fly the AH-1. Anyone ever heard about add-ons for LB2 that feature additional A/C? Google doesn't find anything

Thanks,
goofi

There are no graphic enhancing addons for LB2, but you can run it in hi-res with alot of AntiAliasing and Anisotropic filtering on todays computers.

The great thing about longbow 2 was the ability to fly the blackhawk and OH-58D.Im sure am bored to death of gunships.I really liked flying in troops and scouting a lot better. Was much more to it then just blowing stuff up.Same with HIND,plenty of different tasks to do,aside from gunship you had troop insertion, mine laying and level bombing.Loved it.

I enjoyed LB2 and Hind the most.
LB2 was the most realistic, but Hind was a real hoot to play. As said above so much to do in Hind.
And had actual men running around, not 2D sprites.
And lets face it, the Hind has to be one of the most impressive looking helos built.

Tried LB2 again about a year ago, but so much hassle with graphics and controllers I gave up on getting it going.

Cheers

I've played LB-2 and EECH for awhile, I like EECH for the sheer volume of terrain you can fly in, I don't find it arcade exactly, the flight model was better in LB-2 but I've played EECH for probably 3 years now and always come back to it.

IMO Hind is the best. ( And no, don't spam me with hate mail, I've never played LB or LB2. )

Great verity of missions, troop insertion / extraction, CAS, bombing, troop suppression,
anti chopper, and on and on.

I think the url is, http://www.classic-pc-games.com/pc/simulations/hind.html I wrote the review, so make shure you read the install instructions, as there is a messup, and you have to manually make a folder, or else the game wont save your progress.

Is there any way to up the resolution of Hind?
I still have the original game on CD(only runs in 640x480 though)

From the hills rebounding
Let this war cry sounding
Summon all at Cambria's call
The mighty force surrounding

Men of Harlech onto glory
This shall ever be your story
Keep these fighting words before ye
Welshmen never yield

Damn, I'm going to have to have a look for that old Hind disc. It was a splendid sim in its day, spent many happy hours on it.

If you specifically want combat helos today though, its gotta be EECH, with all the new goodies this is a sim transformed and it delivers the best combat-gameplay out there!

I've always wanted to find a good heli sim, however, it seems that this kind of games is not as popular as FPS, therefore I find some small number of releases, most of witch designed for obsolete pc's.
Now, I have tried Buka's "Red Shark" and "Fair Strike". Both seem to me pretty awkward heli sim's that are neither arcade, nor a true sim. "Fair strike" seemed much better than Red Shark, however never got used to awkward flight model there.
Commanche 4 is best heli arcade ever, however, although having fun with it, it is not the thing I am looking for.
I have the EEAH that to my modest opinion is the best of the bunch I have. Unfortunately it runs only 640x480. There is a key combo that allows you to increase the resolution while in-game, however it becomes reaallly awkward in cockpit view, as you have your cockpit as a 640x480 square in the middle of the screen that flies in the air, surrounded by the rest of the terrain. You should see that!
EECH never ever found it on cd around, so I have never tested it, however, if it is better than EEAH, well... I suppose it is a valuable piece of game then...
Now, I have stumbled upon some game titles these days and I need an opinion from experienced rotorheadz before deciding which one to take.
1. EECH2 - not very positive comments here on SimHQ, I saw a lot of disappointed fans here, still I will spend some cash on it...may be....
2. Activision Apache Longbow Assault - it seems that nobody has ever tasted this one. Here is the official website, so somebody may recognize the cover and say a few words about this one. http://www.activisionvalue.com/titles/Apache2/overview.html
3. Activision AH64 Apache Air Assoult - seems this is a predecessor of the above title, or the same game with different package. Here is game cover available - http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/object/497/497372/657059boxart_160w.jpg . Can you advise on this game as well.
As I have mentioned above, I want to get a game as good as EEAH, so please compare the above games to EEAH.
If someone gives any idea how can I get a copy of EECH will appreciate as well.

Thanx

Predator:

The 'Air Assault' series is nice to look at and has some limited sim-like aspects but I'd have to say my verdict is that they're very arcade-like. I have them and enjoyed a few hours of gunning down tank columns with the head-slaved cannon at close range. I'd recommend them if your looking for run and gun with a taste of flyin' around.

EECH is the way to go right now ... as graphics go. It's not Longbow-II but it's getting closer everyday.

Hey, thanks for guide...
Luckily with a lot of search I was able to find a copy of EECH \:D very happy about that...
About the other sim's - I've found demos of both Longbow Assault and AH64 Assault... they seem to be a series, and I must admit theese are some really early versions of the Comanche 4 ... kinda FPS \:\)

Longbow II - where can I find this one...I have time to look for it, as I am happy with the eech now, still want to try it as well...
