Hi Guys,
Thought you might enjoy this......

The Airco DH2 was designed in 1915 as a single seat scout by British aircraft designer Geoffrey de Havilland. Powered by a 100hp Gnome rotary engine, the DH2's pusher design was de Havilland's answer to the probelm of firing through the propeller - place the pilot and gun in front of the engine. Although inadequate when compared to later scout designs, the DH2 was a succesful fighter for its day and played a major role in bringing and end to the reign of the German Fokker Eindekkers.
The machine seen here was assigned to 32Sq based at Vert Galand, one of the best known British aerodromes on the Western front. This field saw continuous use from 1915 until 1919, and many of the WW1 era buildings can still be seen there today.

Cheers mates

Thanks for the visual treat, Skylark! Time for a DH2 campaign, I think... Do you know of a good pilot's memoir that features the DH2?

McCudden flew DH 2's with 29 Squadron late '16 early '17. His description's of flying and fighting the DH are very good. You'll find them in his book "Flying Fury".

I'm in the throes of flying a campaign with him in 29Sq at present, using WFP2. Started in October '16, it's now December. Have gained two victories so far, but it's very tough. The DH 2 lacks speed, so if you are caught in a tight spot things get very iffy! And the Albatross D.II and Halberstadt's can make things interesting. \:\) I like Greybeards FM in WFP, but the DH does exhibit two unusual characteristics that I don't believe are truly historical.

One is dive. Push the stick forward and the DH will only dive at around 20-30 degrees. Nose won't drop any further. Either cut the power (which kind of defeats the prupose) or perform a split S to get out of trouble. The other oddity is rudder. Apply judiciously, otherwise it will throw you over onto back and you'll do a couple of spins before you know what happened. \:\)

I actually have that book. Forgot I had read it! I recently read "No Parachute: A Fighter Pilot in World War One", by Arthur Gould Lee, who recounts his experiences flying Sopwith Pups, (mostly), and Camels in 46 Squadron. He tells hair-raising stories of ground attacks at Cambrai that destroyed his nerves and caused him to be sent to a training squadron in England in early 1918. I like the Pup a lot in RB.

Gould Lee's book is a masterpiece! A thoroughly good read - he's very open and honest about his thoughts and feelings. Most uncommon for men of that era.

And your right.... the Pup is an absolute joy to fly. \:\)
