How about a shot of the old river for comparison? But that river does look very good, as I recall the old rivers in modded RB3D are a muddy brown. Then when firing bullets into the water it would splash blue.

Hi Skidd,

Nice! The river has that directional flow look which was missing with the PL Muddy River.
If this is finished? Where can I D/L it from? So I can test it in my HASP2 campaigns.

Here's the original rivers

They're just kinda, well, BLACK. No excitement at all.
These new rivers actually glitter and flow at certain altitudes and distances! You have to see it to believe it.
There used to be a glitter problem with terrains due to the variance of color used in proximity to similar shades, excacerbated by low resolutions. I used the reverse process to create glitter and movement in these tiles.
The new tiles have just been sent to Swordfish for hosting.
Keep an eye out for them here:
http://hosted.filefront.com/CSqSwordfish
Hopefully Flybert will send me 128x128, 64x64 reduced PL2 terrain copies to make into a VOL set with PL skies and effects!
The new rivers will continue to be an addon patch to avoid copyright infringement.

I am surprised it took so long to get these rivers nice! I remember years ago complaining on the board about the muddy rivers in the modded game. The response back then was 'people who live in Flanders today will tell you that the rivers are not blue but a murky brown color, so actually brown rivers are more authentic.' Yea right.

Actually, I based these rivers on the appearance of the now very old Beery Superpatch Terrain2!
To install save copies of the original same-named files from the PL2 unzipped folder(s) which contains them then copy these in (overwrite). All go in the DATA\3DPatch folder WITH a non-PL glide VOL set like stock or OTE/PL combo.
OR just make a new CM11 folder and add as is after having installed the PL2 terrain.
If you use CM11, be sure to REMOVE the PL2 terrain patch first(and the dromelites if used - the dromelites should always be added after PL2 terrain if you use them as separate patches or you can do the same kind of file replacement as above for them too), make the file changes, then re-ADD.
Keep in mind the order of CM11 patching when using patches-over-patches. Always REMOVE patches and any patches which relate to them if doing any changes in the folders. Do not re-name existing folders or CM11 will "lose the path".
NOTE: The Winter rivers turn green for some reason unknown at present, they are blue in the unzipped folder. I tried OTE/PL and stock as base - still green. Just remove (or don't add)these tiles from the PL2 terrain folder for now if you can't stand them. I'm looking for help with the problem.
NOTE: Rivers at their muddiest are a light latte chocolate - never dark brown. They can have that appearance from altitude in certain lighting conditions, even looking black, but that's too rare for me. Well, they're never blue anymore for that matter! Let's just assume pristine pastoral France is what we're flying over!
Date based patches could include more seasonal appearances of rivers but location based would be impossible in RB.

I remember that discussion Toadvine! It was Blackadder who went on about the brown rivers, all through 2002, as Kess and Rabu were making their terrains:

Hi Guys,
Seems to be some varying opinions about river/canal colour.
So I Googled 'Rivers of Flanders' and found these pics....
Seems that river/canals are brown but they can also be blue
when they reflect the colour of the sky.

Cheers mates

You know, the brown rivers may have been quite nice if they had had a similar color mix as in the "new rivers" that simulates wavelets. It's the solid unchanging darknes that makes them look artificial IMO.
Maybe I'll play with mixing some blues and greens in the brown. The big problem is that RB's tiles are so repititous.

The winter GREEN rivers are fixed. They are now blue in-game as well as in the folder. I sent 'em out to be beta tested to be sure before I get embarrassed again!
Check http://hosted.filefront.com/CSqSwordfish in a couple of days to see when/if the D/L is updated.

Hi Skidd,
Just D/L'd your 'Blue River' and they look pretty good to me....
If I read your download page correctly. It seems that at least 30 interested
persons have taken the time to D/L your files. However, they don't seem to be bothered
to post feedback on what they think about them or at least extend the common courtesy
to thank you for your efforts in creating these files and then making them available for D/L.
I know how frustrating this feels sometimes because I post WW2 fighter skins over at EAW and
receive few comments from a few interested individuals but it's usually very little compared with
the number of times they are downloaded. It's often a surprise to me when see them
appear in someones posted screen shots.....

As for your 'Blue River' D/L, there's my two cents worth:
These files look really great for both the Spring & Summer seasons.
However, for the sake of seasonal differences, how about this.
Perhaps the Autumn River tiles could be a bite muddier and the Winter River tiles
might be a little grayer in colour with perhaps narrower river flows bordered by frozen river banks.
Just thinking out load mate.

My thanks for your time in creating these tiles and for making them available
for all us RB3d fans out there....

Cheers mate

Thanks, Skylark. I know you, you're the 109 nut! I'm an old EAW fan but patching it was difficult. Maybe it's a lot easier now (packaged) but WWI got me hooked! OK, so RB's worse for patching, LOL!
My favotite WWII plane: Hawker Tempest Mark V Series II.
Not my D/L page. "Swordfish" has graciously offered to host them at his Filefront account.
Over 50 hits for the whole PL2 terrain I sent to that D/L location, there are other D/L sites for them as well so, probably, hundreds are enjoying them.
I don't mind not getting feedback from everybody, just so it's enough to know if the stuff is acceptable. It's always been on-line nature that about 5 to 10% of users post. Count your blessings LOL!
Yes, the rivers could use more improvements, I'll keep at it. The big problem is there are so few tiles to work with and only 3 seasonal groups. You have to keep things anomalous or the repititioun is too evident. There are heavy restrictions due to the fact that tiles are turned 90%, 180% and 270% and have to match at the seams of any side of any other next-match tile. Some winter rivers should be nearly completely iced over for skaters to play on!
There's no directional lighting effects on the water.
Generally the blue in all the "new rivers" should be darker.

Hi Skidd,
I seem to remember back in 02 getting my tail waxed On-line by a squadron of Hawkers.
Was that you?
The winter river looks nice and cold now with the new colour.
I've noticed that the game reads *.bmp river tiles. When you paint them do you change them
to *.jpg files first? I have PaintShopProp7. Is this what you use?

Cheers mate

I've never flown on-line, Sky. Not on dialup, not even gonna try.
I use MSPaint. You heard right! It's very handy. BTW MSPaint now handles several formats including JPG.
If I ever need fancy art editing, working with palettes and such, I have The GIMP, an amazing and free paint program loaded with more functions than I could ever understand. I also have an old PSP 6 but have never used it.
All graphics files in RB are "256 color bitmap" BMP's.
I use the JPG format for screenies as a favor to my image hosting service to save me hosting space and save them bandwidth.

Hi Skidd,

Know what you mean by "being hooked".
Ever since I D/L'd HASP2 back in January I've been fascinated with the excellent modeling
and colour schemes of those WWI warbirds. I started playing for the Allies
but after I encountered a few Albatros fighters I switched over the to Jastas
so I could fly those pretty machines myself.
I am at present flying the Pfalz DIIIa fighter in a Jasta 10 campaign
and I'm absolutely blown away with it's detail and Jasta colour schemes.
It's a bit of a challenge staying alive flying the Pfalz in combat
but that just multiplys the fun factor...

Cheers mate
