Hi,

after a long time I reinstalled JFA-18 because of the XP fixes as described in the topic above. When I load a single mission or start a campaign, I sit in the cockpit and everthing works fine. But when I press F8 for the outside view it takes about 1 or 2 seconds and the game/ the PC freezes COMPLETLY (have to do a hard reboot). Has anyone an idea about fixing it?

Thank you for all help!

If you fly for a long time without using an external view, does everything work ok?

My first guess is some sort of video problem, perhaps driver-related.

I got a step closer to the problem....

Yes everything works fine from the inside. But on the outside -> freeze.
This weekend I discovered that it has something to do with the sound. On this PC I use a onboard soundcard. When I disable it in the BIOS, I can switch to outside view without freezing.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I would be very thankful for any help (ans don't tell me to fly without sound! ;\) )

You could try updating your sound drivers.

If you search back keyword CTD you may find series of my posts calling for help with similar problem. Me too found that outside view was the most critical when that was happening. It was at some point very frequent, in some point of time no so much but lately it returned. I also noticed lately that there was some sound distortion of afterburner sound, however it did not cause the crash.
I always attributed this to Saitek X-45 hat movement. Do not know why. Do you have by chance this stick?

If not Saitek, then let us compare the sound cards we both have.

Hmm, I think I solved the problem. I installed a new sound driver (chose manually an alternative sound driver in XP) and now it works!!!

BUT:

I can't read all radio commands. There seems to be a flat grey square over it? WTF is that?

There are a few commands that can change the color of the radio text and its background box. Play around with the following to see if any have effect:
MSG_COLOR
MSG_LIKE_HUD_TOGGLE
MSG_NEXT_BOX_COLOR
MSG_NEXT_TEXT_COLOR

MSG_NEXT_BOX_COLOR is probably the most promising choice. None of these commands are mapped to keystrokes by default, so you'll have to do that first.

Sorry, but I have been there too. I thought that it was sound driver so I changed, but after shortlived improvement the problem came back with full force \:\( . But perhaps you are luckier. Still let me know if that continues as I really would like to see it fixed.
Anyway what sound card and what driver you have?

Hi Polak,

you're right. I can run JFA18, but after some time flying aroud it CTDs. I don't know what causes this... I have to search again.

BTW: I use an onboard sound card. I think it's name is CMedia9880 and I use a XP build-in driver.

Well thats bad news for you, but better for me. At least not alone in this \:\)
So let us explore some commonalities, here:

Dell 2.8 Ghz with 512 MB memory
WinXP
128 PNY Verto FeForce FX5500
Soundblaster Live
Saitek X45
similar CTD occurs JFA18, Steel Beast1, 3dSMax (no sound or joystick action here !)

I really do not know, I think maybe this has something to do with mother board. To tell the truth, it is kind of home made computer as I put some parts together. But I do not think that this is IT, rather I would suspect that it is some problematic piece of hardware, or driver.

I would like to jump back into FA18 saddle as there is some new interesting developments still going on here. But as it stands, I cannot test anything, so in frustration I even moved it out of HD.
