I don't believe they had shoulder harness that detered them from leaning. They probably had a lap belt holding their ass down. Even some shoulder harness configurations allow your upper body to lean.

Here's a few drawings of these harnesses:

There was always some freedom of movement at the shoulders, which allowed a pilot to check 6.

Wow! Another great update from the team! The game is coming around very nicely. The blimps looked excellent. (I wanted to see you shoot one) Any hints on the next update? Maybe some combat as said above?

The 6DOF thing is a moot point : if you think you can stretch your virtual neck too much, just edit your TIR profile to limit the side movement.
Do agree with the comments about the glossy reflections : a bit too much.
I also think the colours are a bit too saturated for the terrain. In contrast, the balloon is really awesome and this sequence of flight is magic !
Really looking forward for more, keep up the good work KoTS team !

peoples republic of ocean beac...
thanks to VikS and entire GT team! That was really incredible.

It looks so smooth and I do not mind the reflective effect on the wing undersides - it looks realistic to me, especially with the self-shadowing and the 6dof and whatnot. ;\)

This vid would also indicate to me a much sooner release than I would have thought before seeing it.

How has work progressed on the armament models? Machine gune effects? Bullet trajectories and impact/damage calculations? Incindiary depiction?

Its going to be fun flaming those gasbags when the time comes....

Not a moot point by any standard. If other players have more, unrealistic, freedom of movement then they have an advantage. Why would I cripple myself then?

I think 6DOF movement should have hardcoded limits. And I'd like to see realistic leaning movement accompanying the looking-over-the-side-of-the-cockpit views. Just to see how it works... It might just be one of those small but crucial immersion features that will help suspension of disbelief.

Just be searching for old Fokker DR1 photos. From the one on this page (scroll down) the dev's have the reflections on the top wing spot on. You can see the reflections of the wing spars on the top wing.

That's an intrigueing photo, I never saw the wing skin reflections so glossily before, in other pics...

I've been pimping KOTS on a general gaming board I go to.

When I mentioned this issue someone posted that Biggles used to spot the Huns by the glint of the sun off their wings.

Well that's good to know (about your pimping Mogster).

I did mention the hope that reflections would play a part in aerial spotting on page one, and this idea has been well promoted on GT's forum.

It comes under a theme I have pushed called Preparing the Aerial Battlefield, and it promotes the idea that authentic environmental conditions must be recreated first, so that an authentic simulation of aerial combat in WWI can follow.

The first component of the theme is to accept that a sim's aerial battlefield should be as visually expansive and realistic as technologically possible, while also acknowledging the fact that somehow small patrols in an enormous sky could hunt, find, and then do battle as they did, day in and day out during the First World War. From this imperative comes the question of asking how did the war's protagonist actually practice patrolling for the enemy, and what tactics did they employ to engage the enemy once he was found? Using the above preconditions then (the need to recreate the simulated sky environment with as much fidelity as possible, and using the historical record of the actual tactics employed as a benchmark), the virtual combat generated by a sim can be compared to the genuine article for it's ability to recreate and comply with the historical facts.

Put simply, if you don't have a sun that can blind in a WWI air combat sim, then you have eliminated one of the main tactics employed during the war. If you don't have realistics clouds that provide cover and can block line of sight for all, then you have eliminated one of the main environmental conditions used in the aerial battlefield to maneuver against one's opponent(s). If a sim doesn't present a means to resolutely search and spot the enemy at significant enough distances in-game, then all the tactics employed during the real war to maneuver for advantage over the enemy can never be recreated realistically.......all these combat practices will depend on getting the initial foundation and fidelity of the aerial battlefield built as authentically as possible.

Of course GT is well aware of these imperatives.

The fun part will be discovering what the virtual arena eventually holds for us in Knights of the Sky!

I have a feeling that there will be much to discover here, but in the meantime the promo videos that GT continues to preview for us have gone a long way in letting us know that seeing is truly part of believing!
