I've got a bit of spare cash just now so I thought I would upgrade my monitor and graphics card.

My system is currently a p4 @ 3.8 ghz with 2 gig of ddr2. my PCI-e 6800 ultra is beginning to gasp at a few of the games I'm playing so the time has come to splash the cash.

I'm looking at a EVGA 7950GT KO SUPERCLOCKED 512MB PCI-E for the graphics which should do me for a while but I'm confused by monitors. I quite fancy the HP LP2065 which is 20.1" and goes all the way up to 1600 x 1200.

Basically, is there any real point in getting a monitor that goes all the way up there? would I be better off just getting something with a lower res. I don't want to get it coupled up to this card and discover the framerates at that res suck. The info for the HP says it has full screen support for other resolutions but I've heard there are sharpness probs running at anything other than the native one. Does anyone have any experience of this monitor? Failing that, does anyone have any other recomendations?

God, I'm so out of touch with technology it's embaressing. \:D

LCDs do have a native resolution and any other lower resolution (you can't go higher than what is stated, which is the native resolution) can look "fuzzy". However, with a 4:3 monitor, 1024x768 should look just fine.

nVidia drivers also have the option of doing scaling which means a lower resolution than native would use up less pixels total (so you'd get black bars on all sides of the screen when playing at 1024x768).

For LCDs in terms of size, you don't really get much of a choice (I say this because Apple LCDs use a lower density pixel than Dell LCDs) -- the larger they are, the higher the resolution since pixels themselves are only so large.

Many people who have moved from CRT to a (good quality) LCD are quite happy, though. You may also want to investigate a wide screen LCD.

Thanks!

you can get a 320Mb 8800GTS for not too much more than a 7950GT

The 7950 does not have DX10 capability, all 8800's do, so if Windows Vista and DX10 are in your future, get one of the 8800's. If you plan to stick with Windows XP for a while, then the 7950 is a good choice. I have a Leadtek 7950 GT with 512MB of RAM, nice card, runs cooler than my old 6800 Ultra.

Cheers lads. I've gone ahead and ordered them anyway. SHould be here tomorrow. I've already decided that vista can wait until my next proper upgrade So I'm not bothered about getting a DX10 compliant card just now.

Well, that was my logic for getting a 7950GT as well. Vista needs a little time to get all the bugs worked out or for MS to replace Vista with another OS. DX10 has yet to make an impact in the gaming community, so I couldn't justify the money for an 8800 card or upgrading to Vista.

W00T! The monitor has arrived and it is awesome! I'm glad I went for one with a 16 by 12 res - It is already making a huge difference! Other res seem Ok too although obviously not as sharp. Wish I'de got one ages ago.

The card and a DVDrw should be getting here some time today as well - they comming from a different warehouse. Hopefully everything should be good to go by evening.

In regards to widescreen monitors, native resolution is a factor, however some will squale games that are only 4:3 aware, so they still look 4:3 on your screen. I recently bought an LG monitor that does this and I'm quite happy with it.
