Please don't flame me but I'm just trying to get some information. First, I have two legal CD's of Falcon 4 and also of F4AF - some at home and some in SD box. Does anyone really know what is going on with FF4. There appear to be some threads on buying it online. Any help would be appreciated. \:\)

Is FF4 an inside joke with the Falcon 4.0 community, or is it really under development?
I had originally thought it was a new Free Falcon update that was canned.
Is that it, or is it a new boxed version of the sim? Or is it even real? Lol!! I'm so confused!

FF4 is real and is out.
Just don't ask for links, those are not legal.

The best SP experience in Falcon so far, IMO.

I have seen the future, and it is Red Viper. Never thought I would go back to the Falcon 4.0 universe. But one mission in RV...the short version is vertical's post above mine - he's right.

Simple install - original F4, then the RV install. I did have to go through the old F4 Patch config routine, but big deal. Next thing I'm in the sim - Wow! the graphics at the base I started from were the most immersive I've seen in a sim. It's twilight, I spool up, start cranking down the canopy and roll down the taxiway...between two rows of cargo planes with all their props twirling, and my frame rates were TRIPLE that of AF at a base.

Taking off and watching the runway zip by looked startling real. What was so striking besides the bizarrely improved framerates was the quite different look of the terrain and the clouds. These are stock, out of the box graphics - no Hitiles or any other mods. And the sky just did not look like Falcon of any knd - far to realistic.

I believe the reason for all this - in addition to a *lot* of hard work by the FF team of course - is that the graphic engine is new or so altered that it might as well be new. The graphic card takes a significant amount of the load now, unlike other Falcon versions which place much of the demand on the cpu.

Meanwhile, a pair of Lancers are slowly moving out up above me, lumbering off towards targets to the north. In fact there is a lot of activity around and above the base. The air world at least seems more populated than my AF experiences during the past few years. The mission went smoothly, except for some damage from AAA protecting a radar site on the flip side of a valley I was sneaking along, staying below SAM radars. The mountain and valley terrain looked better than my recollection of the excellent BaZt mod.

The big question for me though is multi play stability. AF has been excellent in that regard. Early word is that squadrons that are trying RV out are having good luck. But it's early. RV comes with a 700+ page manual, hugely revised. And entertaining. According to the manual, a lot of the MP code has been rewritten, especially for aspects relating to those of you behind a router. Haven't had a chance to fly it online yet, so this critical piece of RV remains an open question.

The manual claims that this version is not the end, but the beginning and that further work on the engine to take advantage of current and future Direct X editions is continuing. Lots of optimism, and judging from the early experiences with this version, I can understand why.

The elephant in the room is the legal status or lack therof for this whole enterprise. The FF forum is providing support for RV, but not linking to dl sites, nor actually releasing the version that is out there on the internet. The guys who are far deeper into the Falcon Drama than I can explain much better why the earlier FF/BMS versions could be released by their groups, but this one cannot. I just wish the various Falcon parties could work something reasonable out. The creativity, quality and sheer spirit reflected in Red Viper demands to be experienced.

Reports are coming in that you can install it over AF. There's a thread about it over on the lockon.ru forums. Same kinda stuff going on, no links but seems to me lots of PM's going around.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

Did I mention that when you fly a mission in the F-18, and you are in the 3D cockpit, you are in a Hornet pit? The MFD OSBs are clickable. In the 2D pit, you are back in the Falcon pit. Have not had time to try other jets yet to see which might have their own 3D proper pit with the stock Red Viper install.

The low light, stormy missions in the rain make for quite atmospheric flying. Explosions actually look like explosions. Looking back at the factory target we hit up North, the JSOWs hits and subsequent fires in the twilight were quite impressive and un-Falcon-like. Thanks T-Rex, et al.

Frugals appears to have the most RV activity I've seen of late in terms of posts - both informative and the, um, entertaining - even more than Free Falcon's own forum. If you are really really "interested", you can check out the strict warnings at FF's RV support forum - but you have to register in order to see that forum. Seek and ye shall find.

I still can't understand why a mod for a game would be illegal. They're not making money off it, and moding is a part of almost EVERY other game on the market today (most of it with official parent developers' support). I just don't get it, both from a legal and an ethical point of view why it is forbidden.

The obvious answer is that it is a mod for F4 which if it turns out better than AF and ppl prefer it, it keeps LP from making money by selling AF. But other than that I can' see how LP could make moding a different game than the one they sell illegal. Anyone care to enlighten me?

One of the reasons there is such a stink about this RV update is it will overwrite and install over the Falcon AF game too, not just the original Falcon 4.0. I have not tried it on AF but I've read it works.

Well if it works with AF, then it should enhance sales of AF rather than hurt them. It seems that LP would be pleased and maybe they will be if the notice an increase in sales.
