Greetings kind aviators and fanatics of Falcon!

I have just had the pleasure of having broadband internet connected to my home PC, and just finished my final exams, so I am looking forward to some online flying.

This will be my first time to attempt flying online, and want it to be a fun and relaxing experience (instead of spending hours trying to get online and end up frustrated and with 0 flight hours). As I am totally ignorant of this "procedure," please post some advice as to how to proceed in this matter, as well as what "supplies" I need. Posting places where I can do "test flights" with human pilots would also be nice. As I said, I have never flown online before and have never given thought or notice to online servers/squadrons/whatnot.

I consider myself of moderate experience with Falcon 4 AF, I can handle my plane decently, land it on the proper runway in a somewhat proper procedure, and am sufficiently versed in weapons employment (and can review the manual on demand since I printed it out), but I am still growing and learning in many areas.

S!

Ok. First you need to get the team speak client software (do a search on google and download it; it's free), install it and then find a Team Speak server you can enter the configuration info into your new client software and then connect to the TS server. Then you need to get IP information for a Falcon AF server so you can join it to fly on that AF server. That's it in a nutshell. One TS server/Falcon AF server combination that is highly advertised is multi-viper's server. There are others, just not as highly advertised. Good luck!

Or.. you can try Falconlobby and you'll see a list of current active F4 servers, u dont even need to know the IP. Also if for some reason you cant/want use TS, there will be no problem, because there r a in-game chat, so you can comunicate without problem. No need for u to join a clan if you dont want. Here you'll find DFs and Camp severs .. or u can set your own.. remember to open 2934 and 2935 UDP ports, or else - no joy. I have flying on all kind of servers and has been so far a very nice experience.

We host a server over at http://www.tacticalgamer.com. We look for team-orientated players and offer basic training as well. Drop a note in the forums \:\)

I have just switched to broadband as well, and would like to try some online flying, however I am not sure if my connection is fast enough for F4:AF.

My connection plan is ADSL 512/128 with the actual speed of around 440/80 - is this OK or do I need to a faster connection.

Thanks

Ya, i'd say you just made it.

Set to 128up 256dn,

set Teamspeak to run as a high priority,

and turn everything else off that the game is not using directly, such as MSN and ICQ and ANYTHING.

The best thing to do Rebel is to try it out. I would think you'll be perfectly ok as you're only uploading your data to the server.

Ok thanks for the response - I was looking at Multivipers website earlier tonight and 512/128 is about the lowest limit they recommend.

I guess the only way to find out is give it a try, but I do not wish to create problems for other pilots online.

As I am at work ATM, I will have to try later, I like the idea suggested by Kisat to use FalconLobby.

It also appears that using Teamspeak is a must, so I will give that a try as well.

I have beeen flying F4:AF multiplayer via a LAN successfully, but I would really like to fly with other pilots online.

Thanks again - hope to fly with you guys online sometime.

MV has a lot of players on it, meaning it needs to be a bit more strict on the clients connecting as one bad one will bring the server down. However, when there aren't many people on a server it seems to run ok. We've had someone from OZ connect to TG server with ISDN (128/128) which worked perfectly.

Thanks for the info Jex - I guess living down-under means we are a long way from the rest of the world. I am not sure if there are any Falcon servers in Oz - probably be the way to go. I will also check out the TG server, you suggested.

I will probably upgrade to a 1500/256 connection a bit later, cant get ADSL2 or cable at my house ATM - too far from the exchange I believe. Actually I had never worried too much about broadband at home in the past - since my boss kindly allows the use of a quick connection here at work for browsing and downloads - just cant use it for gaming. Since No1 son is into downloading music etc - I decided to take the plunge - the bonus is hopefully I can do some flying on-line.

I assume Teamspeak is used in-game for comms between other pilots etc - if so, it sounds like fun.

G'day Rebel50,

Yeah we are a long way .... but these days (especially with broadband and Falcon) distance isn't an issue. I regular fly with guys from all over the world on MV's server (hell they even made me an Admin .... go figure \:D ) and there are no issues .... as long as you have broadband \:\) .

I would definitely recommend going up to 1500/256 just to be safe but you should be OK with what you have now .... so get in touch if you need a hand with anything.

Finally, there are dedicated Falcon servers in OZ .... its just that they are mostly run by the local SQNs and groups. If your interested then let me know.

Cheers

I've now installed TeamSpeak, got a nice new headset with mic.

I've looked at the MV server and talked to a couple of guys through TeamSpeak, and it seems that I can squeeze out 300+ up/down when the server is most active (that is about 4-6am local time).

So aside from TeamSpeak, FalconLobby, and MasterFalcon, I guess I'm all set. I wonder if MV server offers any "training?"

EDIT: I think I am a careful internet user in that I have Zone Alarm Suite 5 and Norton Antivirus running on my PC at all times (DSL connection), and while I can shut down most programs, I wonder if I should turn these off as well when I want to fly online? Won't turning these programs off expose me to risk of hacks and other problems?

The best firewall is the one between your ears in what you choose to run on the internet and what emails you choose to open.

There's a few well known things that should be blocked/disabled on a Windows machine running in the home.

edit: "But other than that...."

Having ports "open" isn't a problem unless your system has been compromised and has something _listening_ on those ports.

Turning off FW's not a problem during your actual gaming time.

Norton's ok if you open worm protection and delete/re-add the Falcon .exe.

ZA, or other FW's will cause you some probs if not set up right.

Turning off all firewalls wont hurt you less you cruising the net or opening strange e-mails.

Good idea to go to Downloads.com and grab ad-aware and spybot to keep your system clean daily after surfing and before shutting FW's down - cleans up nasty cookies that might be reading/recording key inputs (passwords etc).
