Alright. Now that my blood pressure is back under control....

I did a search before posting and didn't really find a 'strategy' so to speak to beat these things. I haven't even seen a 10 or 12 yet, either, so I know it's gonna get worse.

Basically, I'm wondering if there is an altitude (high or low, I tried both last night) that the 6s are blind in, or to what degree my ECM works against them. Does killing my radar help?

I know that I should pay closer attention to planning out my steerpoints prior to the mission, I just haven't done that yet. I also know that a 3-4g turn will outwit the missle but I'm looking for strats that will keep me hidden should I venture too close to a 6.

Anything?

Turku, Finland, your six
IMO most of the missiles are avoidable if flown really low. But that can't be said of the AAA, which is deadly. That single thig makes flying AF more fun than lock-on; we don't have just targets with good air defence, we have whole countries filled but things that go boom and spit lead and fire all over the place \:\)

If you're able, carry a couple of HARMs with you to take out any SAM threats that pop up along your route.

Also check out this thread over at Frugals regarding effective jamming range.

Quote:
Hi All

Here some info on ranges of sams and jammer affect on them as far as range goes.

sa2, Fan Song radar range 46nm, Jammed range 6.8nm
sa3, Low Blow radar range 31nm, jammed range 6.3nm
sa5, Barlock B radar range 158nm, jammed range 30nm
sa6, StraightFlush radar range 40nm, jammed range 6nm
sa10, FlapLid radar range 101nm, jammed range 62nm
Patriot, AN/MSQ104 radar range 121nm, jammed range 85nm

As you can see jammer is affective at jamming the range to track of sams radars also note these ranges are without beaming and any lookup/down issues added into mix

Very cool. I'll plumb it some more but real quick using this example:

sa6, StraightFlush radar range 40nm, jammed range 6nm

Does that mean the sam is effectively jammed from infinity - 6nm or from 6nm - 0nm?

I believe it means at 6nm and under it can burn through your jammer. Outside of 6nm with your jammer on it should be relatively safe.

Also if this holds true for Falcon 4 AF (not entirely sure yet) the jammer provides best protection within 30 degrees in azimuth on each side of the airplane, fore and aft. So basically if you beam an enemy radar the jammer will be totally inefective against it because the radar is outside of your ECM coverage.

sa6, StraightFlush radar range 40nm, jammed range 6nm
That means that the radar can normally aquire you at 40nm but can only aquire you inside of 6nm if you are jamming. IOW, 6nm is the burn-through range.

Awesome! Thanks, yall!

Btw, this weapons pdf is a really cool guide from that thread. Maybe it should be added to the FAQ. Apologies if it is already present.

Keep in mind that your jammer does not give you 360 degrees of coverage.

True, Nov, also keep in mind that the SA-6 is a SARH missile, meaning it homes on the doppler shift your aircraft generates. Normally, beaming with chaff and vertical maneuver is a good defense against these types of systems . . .

This is an old article, but it's content should still be true.

All stated here is true on the one to one ratio, ECM should get you out of the immediate threat. But todays Air Defense Systems are integrated together. This means for example that two or more RADAR's, and not necessarily of the same type, will search at a slant angle and at a known azimuth, and a triangulation will be accomplished and correlate the position. Is IADS (Integrated Air Defense Systems) a part of F4AF? Who knows, but RADAR avoidance is the best method - you can't kill what you can't see.

Flying low will help you almost always. WHen fired upon beam and drop chaff. SA-6 are easy to spoof. Here is the proof:

Just out of curiosity, don't know if I'm mistaken: How can you get a Lantirn pot on a blk52? I recall that only blk52s have IPX antenna in front of the canopy.

Gee, what's an IPX antenna?

Funny photo Novum, looks like the Scott O'Grady story all over again . . .
