Hi
I have this joystick grip and I was wondering if anyone here could ID it?

I am thinking of attaching it to a base with heavy springs and using one of IJ's U2's as the gymble.
The guy who sold it to me said it was taken off a helicopter about 20 years ago so Im guessing its about 30 years old.
I have found nothing on the net that matches it. It has a 2 stage trigger and 4 way hat. All work with loud audible clicks when depressed.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Gunny,
Looks like a Co-Pilots grip from an UH1. Before all the avionics upgrades.

Thanks Ghost,
The Huey was the first thing I thought of but didn't realize that the pictures I had searched could have been A newer model.

looks like you have a real B8 grip, not a commercial joystick grip, althought the early thrustmaster joysticks are modeled on the B8.

Thanks Hurc,
Your correct! \:\) It is a B-8 and probably the original. I emailed the president of aircraftspruce.com, but he said they didn't know the manufacturer of it. It is not made by the company who make the ones they carry. They do carry a much cheaper version than their military spec B8 Here
They also sell quadrants at a fair price too if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

Just if anyone is intersted... I received this email from a US company called Guardian.

Quote:
"Guardian is the manufacturer of G-56679 which has a new part number A218-956679-00
Guardian can not forward spec sheets or divulge any type of information regarding where and when gun grips were installed or what material is used in manufacturing these gun grips. Privy information for Boeing and Government only."
Something tells me thats all the info Im going to get. \:\)

Very nice, Gunny!!!! Man, wish I can afford something like that for my project.

Say, if I can get my hands on one, how would I get all the buttons to interact with my computer?

Take a look here Similan

http://www.technick.net/public/code/cp_dpage.php?aiocp_dp=pinconjoy_pc_game

Since the above link will only take care of the double trigger and 2 buttons, I will probably just wire it straight into an old USB stick.

Chances are I wont find a base for it to plug directly into, so the old soldering iron will have to do. \:\)

Thanks, Gunny. How do you know which wire goes to what on the circuit board of the USB stick? Sorry, I'm stupid. \:D

similan: Trial and error with a multi tester, Basically the wires that go to your Hat switch have to match the connections for the sticks hat switch.

Sokol1: Thanks! That thread is in German but I translated it online. Very cool adaptor he has made. The original adaptors pop up on ebay from time to time ($45 US) is not to bad. Link
Looks like these grips were standard in a wide variety of military craft.

Gunny, that grip comes apart fairly easily.

There is a snap ring on the inside of the cannon plug on the bottom. Pull that out and the cannon plug will come out of the grip. From there you can figure out what wires go where more easily.

All of the switches come out as well.

The guy at Guardian is blowing smoke up yer butt. \:\) The B8 grip is a MIL-SPEC design and as such is publicly available. The hard part is finding WHICH MIL-SPEC number it was assigned. Is there a number on it beginning with "MS" ?

Well what do you know. Its comes apart! Thanks Gene!
I am guessing MS stands for Mil Spec, but it has nothing like that stamped on it.
Here is whats stamped onto it:
Left hand base:
Switch ASSY
Type B-8-A
S/N 5200-875200
D/N 53G4719
G-56679
Under thumb switch:
727004
Right hand base:
78/19
I browsed over at your site and watched the last flight of your F15. What happened?

Yes, "MS" stands for "MIL-SPEC".

The accident report that I have mentions no conclusions as to the why of the accident due to privacy regulations. However, the factual findings in the report show nothing wrong with the aircraft.

The only conclusion I can come to about the cause is OBE or Overcome By Events. He let the airplane get ahead of him. It's really odd because he had over 1600 hours of time in the F-15C and was the Wing training officer.

Unfortunately, he was killed in a similar crash attributed to OBE at Langley AFB in the mid 80's.

For people looking for a bit more modern alternative to the B8 grip, check out Infinity Aerospace at http://www.infinityaerospace.com/infgrip.htm

They're not cheap at $150 a pop, but they're high quality and you can buy switch parts from them for a LOT less than anywhere else. The milspec coolie hat for instance is $90. From Infinity, you can get 'em for $15.
