What I mean by the title... is there any chance we will ever see a easy working, updated Longbow 2 install? Kinda like they did with the Enemy Engaged series...

I have Longbow 2, but haven't been able to get it working for years...even with all the suggestions and work arounds, I've gotten it to run, but the speed is still an issue... I'm tired of trying to get it to work, and thou it is my favorite all time PC game... I may decide to let it go to a loving owner... but I'm still un-decided at this time.

Don't give in. We'll help ;\)
If the game is too fast you must be using that zeckensack-thingy. Use dgVoodoo and the game will run smoothly without having to slow down the CPU.
In regards to the modding stuff. Can't compare the two. For starters, the EECH-community got the source-code, we don't.
Another thing is that I dont think this game was made with modding in mind.
When that has been said, I can (and will...eventually) populate the terrain with more static objects. Its just that its extremely time-consuming, unbelievably boring and I have'nt had the time to sit down and do it the last few months.

It would be nice if we had the eye-candy of the last Gunship! with the playability of LB2.
I suppose that with sims being a dying genre, helo sims are even more specialist especially one as hard-core as LB2.
But then if you're prepared to put the time in, the rewards are far greater than for any arcade shooter \:D

I've tried all sorts of ways Shadow...including the methods you have meantioned... it works, but theres always a problem... with Black Shark coming out and then the Vietnam chopper sim... I was just thinking it's time to give up on LB2... Heck It had a great run, i probably logged more time on it then any other game/sim EVER.

I'm just tired of trying to get it working anymore... but I just can't seem to let go of it... I still hold and read the manual once in a while, lol.

decisions, decisions...

I can see there is still good in you. Don't give in to the dark side.
I recommend set a time and date with any of us and we'll get you going via TS. I know we'll get you running.

What seems to be the issues, Magnum? I think it's almost safe to say we've seen it all when it comes to problems with LB2. ;\)

Is the ram limit still an issue?

Yes, it is - in my case, disabling the page file works. For someone else, he had to disable the page file and limit RAM to 366.

I had to reduce the RAM to 366 too. I hope to get it workin on at least 512 because I have to wait for everthing to pre-cach before getting into the air.

I also want to see stingers that actually hit the target if there was ever to be a reworking of LB2.

I dont have any Stinger issues.
Depending on AI-skill I can hit helos at max-range (4.5Km).

My WinXP systems are all 1Gig ram or higher.
To make it work, Im employing the MS Compatibility Toolkit which has the memory limiting variable that fakes out LB2 that only 366MB of RAM are onboard.

No problems with LB2 at all thus far, apart from the narrow band of deployment for the rockets.

MAG,
Im usually at your TS2 server on Saturday afternoons (PST), and would be happy to help you work out the issues to get you airborne.

I really dont want to disagree with you, but I would have to say LB2 has long legs yet for those that want to fly the Apache online. Huey-1s and Soviet Helos just arent the same thing as with LB2. EECH is there today, and yet LB2 continues to fly.

I don't have Stinger issues either, other than that the enemy Helos are good at spoofing them.

One technique that is very useful is the 'STINGER LOB'. When firing a Stinger, pitch the aircraft UP at the firing point which sends it on a more ballistic trajectory. As it comes DOWN through the enemy rotors it makes the probability of a kill higher (well, I don't know if this is REALLY modelled) and makes the countermeasures slightly less effective as they are when the Stinger follows a straight path and 'sees' the flares immediately...or so it seems.

Once I downed a MiG with a single Stinger (online MP)...but that was a rarity!

It wasn't the ram... I've used the Compatibility toolset, the game ran... but the speed couldn't be slowed down... It looked like the game would run in fast forward on a VCR, lol...

I uninstalled it since, but maybe one day... just so short on gaming time lately, I'll seek out the help.

Magnum,

The method that worked for me without any issue was dgVoodoo plus disabling the page file. I never tried the other wrapper so I don't know how it works, but dgVoodoo is the key to getting LB2 to run at the right speed. Any of the other methods that some people use seem to be way too complex compared to the simple dgVoodoo+RAM tweak.

In short, don't give up, we have the solutions to problems here, and if we don't, we'll find one.

The sticky on this forum has a writeup I did on speed control in the game.

Basically you can do it either by:
1. dgVoodoo sync to monitor refresh rate
2. CPU slow down proggy (like TURBO)
3. Use a retro-sim computer with a 700Mhz or slower CPU clocked system.

Im doing #1 on 1.8, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.4 GHz systems and it works fine. Note that the monitors are LCDs with refresh rates of 65 or 70 Hz. CRT monitors can have refresh rates up above 150 Hz so be aware of that which makes the world 2X faster. If you use TURBO, youll want to also read up on G+'s site the equation I have for slowing down the CPU for LB2, not also that HyperThreading should be disabled via the BIOS to make the slow down linear.

Even against the Havocs? Because over here the Stingers always seem to get sucessfully decoyed by them, forcing me to get within gun range (which is near impossible in the open).

dgVoodoo I tried last time...wouldn't even start...so the compatibility was the only way, but like I said too fast.

What is your monitor's refresh rate set to?

And did you want to try the TURBO CPU speed control method?

Well now my monitor refresh rate is 75... but when I was working with LB2 I set it to 60 with no better luck.

I don't really know turbo... but don't want to have to re-setting hardware everytime I play either... hence the point of topic.
