G'day
I have just bought BoB2 and attempted to install it today.
When ever I attempt to run it I just get an error;

BoB has caused an error in Bob exe and will now close.

This happens on installs patched to 2.03 and installs of the unpatched game.

system is 3.06, 512ram, card Fx5600 128 and operating system ME with DX 9c

any ideas?

Thanks

Have a look into the bob folder (where the bob.exe is) and sort the files in there by date and log files generated during the last session should be on the bottom (or the top, depending on how you sort). Especially crashlog.txt but also bdg_out.txt (only the last 10-20 lines are of interest) and some others. If they are not too large you could copy and paste them into here, otherwise I can PM you my email adress.

Please tell us exactly what happens when you try to run it. Start with what you do at the main menu and everything that happens and what you do step by step.

Also review your install and tell us any messages that you got during the install. From the BOBII CD install, then patch to 2.03 install. We need to be sure you got a good install.

Intel I7 920 processor (2.66GHz, 8MB cache), 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel @1333MHz, 1.8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295, Sound Blaster X-Fi PCI Sound Card, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit , CH Fighter Stick & Pedals ,TrackIR4 Pro thanks to BobII crew.

For a plain install without patch it is just a straight install by wizard with anti virus and everything else disabled at msconfig/startup. Install proceedes fine, get to the DX9c prompt and advises if I have dx9c or above to hit cancel at the next screen, I hit finish. When the next screen (dx9c eula) comes up I hit cancel. Screen closes and I have a DOS window open with the 9x stuff registered, the title on top of the window is "finished", I close the window.

I have has a couple of goes at starting from this point.

One where I leave the disc in and double click on the desktop icon.

This produces an empty window frame through which the desktop can be seen, and inside a small error warning with " BoB has caused an error in BoB exe and will now close with a close button, if left this sits there until the close button is hit.

The second type of attemp to start, is where i reboot the system after the install and then place the cd in the drive.
This brings up the install wizard, which I cancel and then hit the desktop icon.

This produces the same effect as above.

When I try with it patched to 2.03 I get an error message about a missing device.

cheers and thanks

I think I've found the problem

despite updating fron the disc and MS website

DXDIAG still shows Dx 9b

a bit of research shows this "fail to update" is a common and largely unfixable problem.

It's a pity but i'll have to miss out on this one and go back to IL2

cheers and thanks for your help

I see. Most of todays games need DX9c, so you will be limited but OTOH Windows ME limits you as well.

Can't you do a complete DX uninstall, then install the new version? I seem to recall seeing that offered as a procedure to fix the problem, but I've never had to do it myself.

Mmmm sounds scarey, but i'll have a look at that.

I'm also considering going to XP sp2 but I'll have to sacrifice some of my older sims and I'm not sure about my old game port CH combatstick.

Did you try the so called webinstaller on Microsoft's site? This basically via internet finds out what you have, and then is supposed to send everything not on your computer yet automaticalöly to you and automatically install it.
