660424 Bac Giang Bridge (469th TFS)
Weather: - Broken Clouds 7500 VIS 30Nm
TOT: - 0900
Aircraft: - (4) F-105D
Flight Time: - 40 Minutes.

After Action Report:
Im flying Austin 4 on the right wing of Austin 3, just leaving Zebra Anchor, topped up and ready to go. We are to enter the Red River Valley around Thud Ridge and head south along the river. Our plan is to head in low and pop-up for a lob at the Bac Giang Bridge, we are each carrying a pair of M118s, the big 3000lb bombs. One pass, haul ass..

Lead keeps it tight on the run to Thud Ridge at 400Kts. Then a SAM lock starts to warble its nerve-shredding note and I can see the terrifying dot on the RWR creeping inwards. I begin to debate whether to turn off course and try to shake this bogie, or stay with the fast moving flight. Lead is on it though, everybody gets on down to the deck and as we flash over the ridge and bank hard right for the river, the RWR goes silent again.

The flak keeps popping at us, but there is too much to do to worry about it. We are about to step into attack and have to slow it down and level out.

Everybody runs in on target, I am No.4 so the smoke from the previous hits guides me in and I pickle those M118s right on to the bridge. Shack! Thats a hit, it felt good, glancing back I can see the bridge has collapsed into the river.

We execute a wide arc south, dodging more flak as the SAM calls also start to come in. I lose sight of the flight as they accelerate away after their strikes and I am busy throwing wild turns in a vain attempt to silence the RWR. Scraping the deck, I thunder south pushing Mach-1! At one point a SAM lights up right in front me, launching across the nose, so staying this low is the best SAM defense, confirmed!

Some time later, about 40 klicks further south, I start to pull up out of the weeds and climb back into the sky. Throttling back as the fuel gauge winds rapidly down, I switch back to search radar and start scanning for the tanker. Very low on gas now I almost give up, there is no sign of anyone up here.

Then I hear the call Zebra One passing waypoint three, thats the tanker! With hope renewed I continue on course and climb above the clouds. Finally spotting the KC-135, I close in and form up. That was close, no margin remains, we are flying on fumes.

Can you imagine going for the 100 Thud Missions patch?

Next up: We join the 333rd FS Lancers for more excellent missions from the world of the Yankee Air Pirate..
