Number 74 Squadron were scrambled from Hornchurch around 15:00 to intercept what turned out to be 30+ Ju87s with high level fighter escort. They caught the bombers around Rochester, Northern Kent.
The fights inevitably descended to low level chases across the Kentish countryside.
Eight claims were made for the loss of one Spitfire, with two damaged. All pilots were safe.
Such encounters would be relished and christened "Stuka parties". They were ended after the middle of August, however, as the Ju87 was withdrawn and escort numbers were increased markedly. From this point, RAF Fighter Command would feel real pressure.
