IMO probably yes...........

But after playing multiplayer, I wouldn't play singleplayer.

Like the rest of the Battlefield series

It was designed for multiplayer

and with all the trouble I had to get it running
on my system

I would say it is not worth singleplayer only

I used to have BF1942 and I would say yes BF2 single player is a bit more fun from my perspective because the AI is a bit more believable...more human. Lot's of fun playing BF2 whole day today just in single player. I wish there there were more maps and vehicles to choose from.

Update:
Sorry didn't see the world "only" in your title...well if you are just buying for single player I don't know...it's personal choice...but I'm having a blast with it!

IMO, no, because you cannot access the various map sizes on single player, 16 players only.

I just bought the game last week and the only thing I have played so far is single player. Mainly because I haven't figured out how to sign on to my account for multiplayer. But also, becuase I wanted to learn the layout of the maps, and how to fly the planes and choppers.

The AI are not very good drivers. When they walk, they take a long time to figure out which direction they want to go in. It is a good learning tool, but you would not want to do it for the long term.

There is a mod out that allows you to play all the bigger maps with 32 bots, you can get it here and its a lot of fun in single player

Check the forums for the best download link as the fileplanet one is missing

Well, considering that on some days alot of the human players are about as intelligent as the bots... :p

I play single player often and I have to say I really enjoy it. That said, it is obvious that BF2 -just like BF1942- is not a single player game. The AI is very predictable and pretty poor.

The reason I spend most of my time in single player is that finding a multiplayer game and then logging in takes as long as playing a single player game does. The browser interface is absolutely the worst piece of garbage I have ever seen and it really hamstrings the game. When I get 1 hour free time a night, I really don't want to spend 30 minutes of it waiting for the server browser to refresh.

I would say, overall, yes, but it really depends whether you want a "traditional" single-player game (in which case, definitely not) or whether you want something more dynamic and replayable.

The AI is a colossal improvement over the previous 2 Battlefield games. They're not perfect but they fight and behave in a much more "believable" manner and are far more aggressive and challenging. The squad and commander system is also a big improvement.

However, there are two serious drawbacks to the SP game. The first, and by far the most serious IMHO, is that you can only play a fraction of the maps available in MP mode. Two maps (Kubra Dam and Mashtuur City) aren't playable offline at all, and all of the others are only playable in 16-player mode. Since the 32- and 64-player modes are virtually like different maps, with larger playable areas, more spawn points, more vehicle types etc., this essentially means that less than a third of the maps are playable offline.

The second problem is that "unlockable" weapons are not available offline - even if you unlock them when playing online. There is a simple fix for this which involves editing one of the game's configuration files, but this does not work with the 1.01 or 1.02 patch.

Modders are already making steps towards solving the first problem (see the forum on this website - http://www.planetbattlefield.com/battlefieldsingleplayer/realplayer.asp), but there is no solution to the unlock problem other than not installing the patches.

If you want a free game and you like realism, then get America's Army. However, you cannot drive vehicles or fly in helicopters, yet. They have been saying for a while (more 1 year) they will have drivable vehicles, but the current version does not have any. There is a video of moving vehicles in the game, but it is still in development.

AA is not a fast paced game like BF2 because you only get 1 life in each round, so it is rare to see people making suicide runs and doing other stupid stuff.

I used to play AA until Far Cry came out. Now I play BF2 and haven't gone back.

I have been playing a lot of BF2 coop on the LAN. Not that it was initially designed with such in mind but it works well. The initial version has fairly dumb bots. Actually the bots are OK as individual soldiers but terrible when it comes to being SLs, commanders are squad members. (Prolly because function that the bots are scripted to each map)

The coop v2.0 mod is much better in this regard because you get the 32 player maps, more bots and either through scripting or tweaking the bot AI, the bots are better and do a better job as squad mates or following the overall commanders orders.

That combined with work we've done on making the weapons more realistic and modifying kits makes for a better LAN coop game. You can have 5 or 6 players on one team and maybe one or two on te other team and you're having platoon on platoon action. Good stuff.

Depneds on what you want. Fast paced arcade action with almost no ties to reality other than the looks, BF2. If that's not your bag and you want a more realistic tactical shooter that's more deliberatly paced then AA.

Personally I don't think there's ever been a multiplayer shooter that beats AA but that's just me.

Almost (or maybe yes), if fast fun is what you want. Though a dedicated single player shooter is still probably going to be better.
