I used to have BF1942 and I would say yes BF2 single player is a bit more fun from my perspective because the AI is a bit more believable...more human. Lot's of fun playing BF2 whole day today just in single player. I wish there there were more maps and vehicles to choose from.
Update: Sorry didn't see the world "only" in your title...well if you are just buying for single player I don't know...it's personal choice...but I'm having a blast with it!

IMO, no, because you cannot access the various map sizes on single player, 16 players only.

There is a mod out that allows you to play all the bigger maps with 32 bots, you can get it here and its a lot of fun in single player Check the forums for the best download link as the fileplanet one is missing http://www.killpuppysplaypen.tk/

I play single player often and I have to say I really enjoy it. That said, it is obvious that BF2 -just like BF1942- is not a single player game. The AI is very predictable and pretty poor.
The reason I spend most of my time in single player is that finding a multiplayer game and then logging in takes as long as playing a single player game does. The browser interface is absolutely the worst piece of garbage I have ever seen and it really hamstrings the game. When I get 1 hour free time a night, I really don't want to spend 30 minutes of it waiting for the server browser to refresh.

I would say, overall, yes, but it really depends whether you want a "traditional" single-player game (in which case, definitely not) or whether you want something more dynamic and replayable. The AI is a colossal improvement over the previous 2 Battlefield games. They're not perfect but they fight and behave in a much more "believable" manner and are far more aggressive and challenging. The squad and commander system is also a big improvement. However, there are two serious drawbacks to the SP game. The first, and by far the most serious IMHO, is that you can only play a fraction of the maps available in MP mode. Two maps (Kubra Dam and Mashtuur City) aren't playable offline at all, and all of the others are only playable in 16-player mode. Since the 32- and 64-player modes are virtually like different maps, with larger playable areas, more spawn points, more vehicle types etc., this essentially means that less than a third of the maps are playable offline. The second problem is that "unlockable" weapons are not available offline - even if you unlock them when playing online. There is a simple fix for this which involves editing one of the game's configuration files, but this does not work with the 1.01 or 1.02 patch. Modders are already making steps towards solving the first problem (see the forum on this website - http://www.planetbattlefield.com/battlefieldsingleplayer/realplayer.asp), but there is no solution to the unlock problem other than not installing the patches.

BF2 or AA? Depneds on what you want. Fast paced arcade action with almost no ties to reality other than the looks, BF2. If that's not your bag and you want a more realistic tactical shooter that's more deliberatly paced then AA. Personally I don't think there's ever been a multiplayer shooter that beats AA but that's just me.
