How many World War One aviation buffs out there know where the horse emblem worn on Ferrari's comes from?
Believe it or not, it comes from the Italian ace, Francesco Baracca. He destroyed 34 Austrian and German airplanes while flying Nieuports and Spads. He was shot down by ground fire in a Spad 13. Baracca had a jumping horse painted on the side of all of his planes.
In the early twenties, a young car builder by the name of Enzo Ferrari wanted to start his own car company. Baracca had been a hero of his for years, and during a car race, Ferrari found out that Baraccas widow, was in the audience. He approached her and told her that he admired her late husband very much. Could he use Baraccas horse emblem on his new cars? She said yes, and the rest, as they say, is history.
