I thought I'd try to anticipate some of the selection criteria that Aspect Simulations might use to judge prospective beta testing candidates. Here's what I came up with, and please feel free to add any other qualifications that you think should be added to the list!

Demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter (of WWI aviation history, and of current flight sim developments in general)

An ability to communicate (through the written word, and constructively)

The ability to use cognitive skills (for the identification and reporting of errors or problems, which is the primary purpose of beta testing)

Perceived trustworthiness (since the beta testing process is meant to correct problems, not publicize them)

So how do you think you score? \:D

Hey, I'll bet Aspect has a short list already started..........

And trustworthiness regarding how the aircraft really was as opposed to how you would have liked it to be. \:D
I mean, my favourite WW1 aircraft was the Albatros DIII, primarily due to it's looks more than anything else. However I would not want to model it as an "uber-fighter" simply because I am well aware of it's faults.

Good question. I'll try to rate myself:

Demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter - 3.5 out of 5 (buff but not expert)

An ability to communicate - 5 out of 5 (well edumcated and message board veteran)

The ability to use cognitive skills - 4 out of 5 (previous developer experience, mild nitpicking disorder)

Perceived trustworthiness - dunno, but let's say 4.5 out of 5 (no leaks so far, but that may have something to do with the fact that I haven't been a beta tester either)

Average score: 4.125

Seems like I'm beta tester material. Sign me up! \:D

I'm looking forward to this simulation. When you need testing and reporting I would be happy to assist.

Here are a few other attributes:

1. Attention to detail. Self explanatory.

2. Discipline. I mean who really wants to fly around with a stop watch and check turn rates, roll rates, check indicated speed against actual speed over the game world? It's boring, but has to be done! Systemic checks, documented to the 'nth degree, no matter what the fun factor or lack thereof.

3. Character. Hard to quantify, but a man of good character will succeed where others fail. Period. He keeps his word. Part of keeping your word is not talking out of school. Good character is doing the right thing when nobody is looking. Also goes hand in hand with discipline, since that is the book definition from FM 22-100 Military Leadership.

4. Mission oriented. Somebody who will put the mission ahead of his personal wants.

I think that's a more comprehensive yardstick. Everything else takes care of itself if those four itmes are in good order. It's not politically correct, but it's as true today as it ever was. Some things never change.

Here is one aspect you didn't mention.
The applicant is not a slobbering fanboi, and is going to tell you up front and in no uncertain terms what the bugs, problems, innacuracies and gamplay issues are, instead of just blathering "gee, you giys R0Xx0Rs!"

I qualify by default because I also beta tested Flying Corps Gold and Red Baron3D. I don't need no steenkin' other skills. :p

beta testing wolud be nice...

1. i flyed most simulations since red baron 1 on amiga, il2 and forgotten battles in the last 2 years. i like aviation history and history of ww 1 and ww 2 in general, i read many books, build model planes vor nearly 15 years...

2. comunicate? if you can handle some errors from an not native english speaker \:D

3. ok, let´s find the little bugs

4. hat is more fun to know something, that others do not know

see you

Sorry for my bad english, aber normalerweise spreche ich deutsch ;-)

Yep, count me in as interested.

1 Demonstration of WWI aviation knowledge: Average.

2 Ability to communicate: Over 15 international scientific publications including one in Nature, two in Science, one in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, and two book chapters. Know how to use a spell checker.

3 Use of cognitive skills: University professor and researcher (molecular biology). Some 15 years of professional cognition and anal retentive!

4 Trustworthiness: Not a member of any clans, squads, groups, etc. to whom I would gossip. Know a thing or two about keeping my cards close to my chest (it's a big bad world out there after all).

System: PIV 2.4GHz Granite Bay mobo, 1Gb PC2700 DDRAM, GeForce Ti4600 128Mb, Audigy 2, 56k modem

Besides that, I scored a perfect 10 (go figure), and my sister is Bo Derick.........and she wants to meet every Aspect designer too (and repeatedly)!!! \:D \:D \:D

I'll volunteer. Been flying sims since F-16 on the Mac all the way through Forgotten Battles.

Besides, I"m a real life systems engineer with Lockheed Martin and have written a number of software test plans, test cases, and done tons of software testing. At least I know what developers should wnt with software trouble reports and the CM side of things.

I think it will be very hard to judge the ability of each plane, even for WW1 "experts". Pilot reports about plane performances are very subjective. Beside that, there are almost no data sheets about flight characteristics of WW1 planes i guess. Most things are based on 80 years old stories and myths. What it really needs is an aeronautical engineer who understands the physics of flight. Such people can say if a plane behaves plausible or not. I think many things are the same for all planes but the average guy just can't say if the FM makes sense or not. I hope that there are such engineers or pilots within the dev team. Maybe they should get in contact with warbird owners who still fly such WW1 planes.

Since Beta Testing is still a year away, this list will have to be redone then.
